My friend is waiting for cheaper dual core chips and the 64 bit Windows OS to be released before he springs for a new box. Until then he'd like to upgrade his graphics card....the kicker is, his mobo only has an AGP 4x slot.

I believe (pls correct me if I'm wrong) that an 8x card will work in there? Also, it's my understanding that in the universe of possible computer bottlenecks a 4x AGP port isn't the worst one to have.

Finally, if you have any suggestions for him on what to get...he's looking to spend $200. Hey, thanks.

Uhhh... isn't 64-bit windows out already? (and obviously dual core is out)

EDIT: oops, missed "cheaper"

How about an X800 pro refurb for $179?

You could also do a 6800 regular in this range.

leadtek 6800le...will probably unlock and overclock nicely. It's still around $125 at newegg. A friend of mine just got one and I unlocked it with rivatuner for him. He got lucky cause everything unlocked without any problems(16/6). Plays BF2 nicely.

Thanks all....I think I'll reccomend a 6600GT to him, just so he's in the (somewhat) mainstream. I'll also mention the 6800LE option, if he's up to overclocking and experimentation.

You should've mentioned his CPU/memory. AGP 4x sounds like a very old motherboard probably in the 133 bus era.
Is he and can he even play newer games? If not, I'd just recommend a cheap dx9 card.
