AGP? 1x/2x/4x? No clue...

If my PC is only AGP 1x...and I buy a 2x/4x card...will this card run in 1x mode? I am still trying to find out what "x" my motherboard is. It is a NEC 9930...but I find no telltale signs of motherboard model on the board anywhere...
 
Don't know the MB, but if you are going to upgrade your video card be careful. LX MB can't support the newer video cards; not enough power to the AGP slot.
