DLP is the best picture you can buy. Samsung is good. Mitsubishi has everyone beat right now.

Don't forget about Toshiba

I  my 50HMX96 after researching Samsung and Mitsubishi.

CostCo was selling a Panasonic 56" DLP with TV stand for $1499, if that was available in my area I would have bought that. In retrospect I'm glad I didn't since 50" is the perfect size for our viewing distance (around 8-10 feet).

Pretty sure Toshiba is still using an RGB color wheel... Of the 1080p DLP sets available I've always looked at Toshiba as the annoying little brother to Mits and Sam... always getting their hand-me-down technology. The samples I've seen at other stores haven't turned me on.

Samsungs look great with their RGBCY color wheels and the Mits with the RGBCYM wheel is the best picture I've ever seen in an RPTV. By far.

I don't know when you bought your Toshiba but they are way behind the times as of right now.

July 2006 and for the price I paid ($1600) I'm satisfied. If this TV lasts me 4-5 years with 1 bulb replacement then I've got my moneys worth. Then I'll either sell it for $400 or give it away as a gift. Who the hell am I kidding? I'll probably replace it by summer 2008 ;)

At $1600 it must have been a 720p. That's a good price for what you got. I just sold off my 720p Mits. Not a bad TV but there were better models available when I got it. (I'm a Mits dealer so Free>Better model from someone else :p)

Yep it's a 720p.

I was disappointed that Toshiba advertises their 1080p DLP's as 1080p when they're not really. IMHO that's misinforming or deceptive marketing.

You're talking about the wobulated 1080p chip. All DLP RPTVs use that chip. (Or a variant of it) The chip might not be 1080x1920 (1080x960) but the net result on the screen is. That's the only claim that LCoS has over DLP right now and that will even up in '07 with the true 1080x1920 chips. As it is, with only an 8ms delay, the wobulated chips are nearly indistinguishable from the non-wobulated chips.

I have a Panasonic 50' (50px50U) and love it. I looked at all the DLP's but bit the bullet and went with Plasma. I upgraded to this from a 56" crap Zenith DLP!
I would go Plasma Pilgrim! Get at least a 42" and you will love it. Panasonic is way up there in terms of performance.

I'm upgrading my current plasma in 3years (warranty runs out). When tv/cable has matured and has more HD content, I'll also purchase a nice HD format dvd player (hopefully HD-DVD) :p

I just bought an HDTV and my advice to you is to go the store and spend some time really *looking* at the TVs. Look at them from different angles. Look at them from different distances. See if the people at the store will let you watch different types of inputs.

I spent a few hours at the store and I came away with the plasma. Why? The DLP looked okay, but every one of them got gray from the side. You had to be right infront of them for them to look their best.

Plasmas don't look as nice from up close. The colors are very vivid, but I wouldn't get one if you're going to sit really close to it. Don't worry about burn-in, it's not nearly as bad as it used to be.

Every LCD TV I saw looked like crap. I'll get flamed for it, but there were four of us looking at TVs and we all just laughed at the LCDs and walked past. The picture just wasn't that good.

I also looked at projectors, and I almost picked one up. It's nice having the big screens, but our living room has a huge window in it.

Whatever you pick, make sure that you go look at TVs. Don't just listen to people on here, because these things are subjective, and you also have the problem on forums that people want to defend their purchase and make it seem to be the best, even if it isn't.

I really hope that Mistu 73 incher drops in price by next summer when I'm ready to buy a TV. The sheer size of it is amazing. I saw one in the ABC Warehouse ad this weekend, they want $5000 for it. Of course, ABC Warehouse prices are always "or less" and the salesmen will haggle with you. RossMAN, you'd love it there :D. Still probably end up paying close to five grand out the door for it after the tax.

I'd like to see more DLP's using LEDs instead of bulbs, but it remains to be seen if that will see widespread use. That seems like the perfect television really, you get large picture, great quality, and no bulbs to replace. It must be expensive compared to bulb+color wheel, because it seems like it's great technology.

They're not... DLP has surpassed LCoS in range of reproducible colors, dynamic range between black and white, longevity and overall picture quality. Next year when you start to see the laser driven DLP engines the gap will be even greater.

Hah... that's not the opinion of many. Also, I think you are wrong about LCoS color fading. Each of the technologies has their own faults though.
He's not wrong.

Also, look up "Green blob effect" regarding the SXRD's. Big problem.

DLP. The only advantage of having a plasma/lcd is being able to hang it on the wall or other space related benefits.

They make some of the best plasma on the maket.
Not at the price range of the DLP, and the DLP's from Samsung and Mitsu still are sharper.

Plasmas do have vivid colors, as some have mentioned, but the sharpness just isn't there, and the screen door effect is a deal-breaker for me.
Same with the big LCD's....screen door effect.

The SXRD Sonys have a fantastic picture that is the equal of the DLP's to start with, but the thousands of reports of green blob effect and the degrading of the picture over time is probably going to keep me from buying one right after Christmas.

At this point, I'm down to the Mitsu and Sammy 61" 1080P DLP's. Really trying to talk myself into including the SXRD in this mix, but the long-term prospect scares me.

Meanwhile, I've had a 720P Sammy 50" DLP for 3 years now, and it's still perfect.

Here is a very extensive review and the JVC DLA-HRM1 was the only set to dominate the benchmarks.

Yeah, and the price reflects it (MSRP: $45,000).

Not to mention that the only sets included in that comparo are other LCoS sets.

Personally I like what I've seen of the D-ILA sets (though I like SXRD even more), but I have real long-term concerns about image decay, and the JVC sets are not known for their reliability. I ended up with DLP, though obviously YMMV.
