AGH! People crazy...college computer admins think SETI@Home is a security risk

I have my own hard drive for my Cisco classes, and I have SETI@Home on it. Several other people in the college have independently put SETI on several other systems. All the installs have been removed. It seems that the network admins here think that SETI@Home is a security risk. However, these same people also are running IE 5.0 with Win98 first edition, and no updates, on all computers in the network here. Isn't it lovely knowing that there's intelligent people in charge? :|

I'd find the head of the IT department and point out the problems - even if you don't get to put SETI on the machines, at least they'll be more secure and the college will be "somewhat" up to date. 😉

<IE 5.0 with Win98 first edition, and no updates> :Q:Q

And they say SETI is a Security Risk? They don't know Security Risks from a hole in the ground. :Q

I get a security newsletter twice a week, and there has been only 1 issue this whole year that didn't have a blurb about a piece of MS software that was found to have a new security flaw. Sheesh.

I agree with Networkman. Go to them and nicely let them know that they have some security issues with the network.

Point them to this:
Microsoft Security

It doesn't help much with Win98, but if they are running NT or 2K servers, have them use HFnetCHK to inventory what patches/upgrades they need to secure their servers.

That really sucks:| ,& those Network admins should know better re IE5 & 98!:Q ,even I know that & I'm a mechanic!😉

Oh geez... Another case of ignorance at work. If they don't understand it the simple solution is to remove it. All I have to say is...

Got the same thing from the Network Security Officer at my work. Half of the user community here runs Gator, Kaaza, Morpheus among other spy ware. 😉
