Posting for a friend who needs the help of a computer nerd. Friend has unsecured wireless too. (I just fixed that)

Should my friend be worried? What course of action must my friend take? I doubt that my friend actually uses his online for anything except emails and occassional surfing.

Here is the letter:

My suggestion would be to get rid of wireless (to show a court he tried if he does get sued) and if he is the one doing it stop. This stuff isn't a joke and it stays with you.

it doesn't say that they are suing him, just that they want him to stop.

so secure his connection and move on

No way. This didn't happen. Optimum Online throttles anyone who uses their upload speeds for any length of time. Bastards.

Stop downloading stuff illegally. BTW what was it?

If you read the fvcking OP, it was called "Entourage"

And if you missed the part where it said "HBO" which is a premium pay channel, you'd realize that this gets very iffy when it comes to the legality of downloading it.

Can some of you people not read?? There was nothing in there about downloading anything. The complaint was sent by a rep for HBO, a copyright holder, to the ISP to indicate that a certain IP had made available certain copyrighed materials for download. In other words, someone made episodes of entourage available for download using his IP, presumeably using the unsecured wireless access.

Bottom line, secure the wireless access and move on, this is a very routine thing. ISP's get these notices all the time, and they usually respond by warning the customer.
