That explains why it's hard to find good male singers who can sing on pitch (i'm very very pitch-picky), while it's much easier to find a female who can do so.

Look it up, the differences in our hearing is profoundly different. Not to mention the difference in the vocal cords/head/sinus.

No as a matter of fact it's a great way to test (and break in) your tweeter voice coils. After a few short seconds at full output, even the nastiest domes will have that silky sound we all like. Professor Lirpa was exactly right.

It's fed through an array of piezoelectric drivers attached to a long throat highly directional horn. This is to minimize the effect to people below. Of course it bounces off everything and can be heard anyways. It's funny to watch people walking around tilting their heads, sticking a finger in their ears or even stopping to wonder what they're hearing. :laugh:

You keep pet rats? Try it on them - they'd probably like it. :laugh:

the mosquito sound is 15khz fyi. big difference from that and 18khz. many speakers can't even reproduce 18khz.

Actually many notebook speakers with their small diaphragms would be ideally suited for producing higher frequencies. Most likely distorted too. A 20KHz tone is good way to find the clipping point - it will be inaudible until the amplitude is increased to the onset of clipping. Back the level down a hair and you're all set. This is good for adjusting at the PREAMP level obviously. A 10kW amplifier running at 20KHz to clipping is probably not a good idea. 😛

Try this. :Q

It's a 16KHz burst which is actually a 3rd order subharmonic of the ultrasonic signal used in some cities to count traffic. Those bucket looking things pointing down at cars as they pass below.

Although... I can think of a great use for this.

At 2am the bar below us lets out and then 5-20 drunken idiots stand around below the door shouting while the workers try to get them to leave. Our two bedroom windows are right above where they end up standing every night.

Some 15kHz+ material might give them some more incentive to move along :laugh:

well you know me babe, the pre-amp is the second most important stage. clip the pre-amp and everything else is garbage.
 
I don't know, I kinda like these noises... I like the "nails on a blackboard" sound too. I mean, there are other noises I'd rather listen to, but seeing everybody else in the room recoil in horror makes me smile.

Having played w/ function generators in lab, I can say that I can still hear well into the 17kHz range, but again, people use pure tones in Rap all the time. Even though I'm not a fan, I don't see how they think they'll repel kids by making 'music' 😛
