Age old windows problem, how to keep DVD from spinning up?

I have a good computer, good dvd burner, but every time I put in a DVD with music/movies I backed up it "spins up" and makes the OS unresponsive for a few seconds. I will start typing and it will "lag" before it appears, open windows will show "not responding" for up to a minute.

Is this just a OS issue or what? It is happening in Vista now, was in XP also. BenQ drive, Sony, Pinoneer, Asus, does not matter.

It is ticking me off a lot cause i backed up tons of movies/music to DVD while i upgraded hardrives. Each one I put in does that every 4-5min it takes to copy.

You can disable autorun: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article03-018
Also the 4-5 min time it takes to copy is not bad at all. You should also check to see if you are using the 80-pin IDE cable from your computer to your DVD drive. Put the DVD drive on the secondary channel(assuming your system HDD is on the primary channel) might speed things up.
