I don't have much time these days to play too many games, but I find myself going back to a relatively old game, AOE TC. Especially when you play it with Gamevoice, it's truly a marvelous game.

Anyone else out there think this is probably the best game of the last few years? (in it's particular class, it's not a FPS or RPG of course).

Any other games like it on the horizon? Anyone heard about a potential followup (AOE III or something)??

I'm pretty sure Ensemble has something else up their sleeve...I don't think it will be another AOE though. Should be a good game if it's anything like their previous stuff!

Actually, Ensemble's next game is called Age of Mythology and it will be using their newly built Bang! engine (3D graphics).
Check out their website here

BTW, I agree...AOE:TC is awesome. AOE:ROR is fun to revisit as well.

AOE and AOK may be the best computer games ever made, i can't see how anyone would rather play Q3 or team fortress over them. Seriously.

AOE and AOK are well made games, but I never really got into them. I played AOK for the first time right after playing Homeworld. Homeworld had just blown me away, and AOK didn't do that.

Actually, this game looks kinda bad to me. I mean, star wars should have good scale. It looks kinda silly with AT-AT's being the same size as a trooper. Star Wars really needs a 3-D engine (a good one, not the crappy one they already tried) to be good.

But thats just my opinion. It could be good for all I know.

Rick Goodman, the lead designer of the original AOE, left ensemble and formed a company called Stainless Steel Studios(SSS) that is coming out with a game called Empire Earth sometime this fall.
Here's a link to the Sierra Studios EE page Empire Earth

Ive been playing AOE2 recently as well. Although certain things about it piss me off. How your units like to chase enemy units that they know they cant catch all the way across the map, getting them killed in the end. And the computer in the campaigns is just cheap. He constantly harasses you, knowing that no human can possibly micromanage enough to do so or defend against it. Also, his archers have the uncanny ability to take a shot, move back, take a shot, move back etc....no human would ever be able to do that with 10 archers at once. I'd like a good opponent, not a cheap one. Still working on it though.

AOM looks awesome, but I probably wont be able to play it on my laptop, with its meager 3d acceleration, although to be honest, quake 3 does run at 30ish fps.

Empire earth also looks good, but more like a jack of all trades, but master of none.

I'm not much of a gamer but my grandson loves the AOE series. I'm curious about the reference to "Gamevoice" though:

What's Gamevoice?

where you associate sounds that you say into a mike with keys that you would otherwise press, so you can talk instead of useing the keyboard.

yep, the computer has more control over the units than any human can possibly have, but remember it can not think. You can easily beat the campaigns. But thats not the point of the game. It is made to play against humans! see my thread " wanna play aok ?"
Also if you set the units in defensive mode, they won't chase other units!
EDIT:
why don't I see any replies to my thread for AOK?

Actually, we use gamevoice to set up kind of a 'conference call' while we're playing the game. We can all talk while playing the game, which is really entertaining. Gamevoice allows you to talk to everyone, or select a specific team, or select specific individuals to talk to.

If you've never used it, take a look at the free version (all you need is your own mic and headphones). Excellent.

Thanks for the info on the other games, I'm gonna go check those out now!

datalink7: Thanks for the info. Looks like I need to pick up some headphones and a mike for my grandson. (Gotta maintain my rep as the world's coolest grandpa! ;))
