I found AOE3 to be pretty disappointing. Other than the great graphics, the game play was exactly the same as AOE2 and AOE.

Any RTS is tough online. Lots of hardcore Korean players.

They still play starcraft instead.

FPS's utilize a completely different skill set when compared to RTS, it takes practice, if you really want to get good I would suggest installing one of the older RTS's so you can get a better feel for the genre, like Starcraft or Warcraft II, then you can build upon that when getting into the newer titles.
I've never been a big fan of the AOE series but if you like it, just be persistent. If you find yourself really enjoying it then I would suggest Rome:Total War which is IMHO the finest RTS to date.

If it's just like AoE and AOE2 then it's a pretty good game. I used to play Rise of Rome ALL the time. such a great game!
