The answer is:

2^(5)

5

But how can you get that answer? Can you show the algebra steps and no calculators.

pull out a 4^4 in the denom, left with 4^8 * 5...

numerator can break down to 2^16 * 2^5

2^16 and 4^8 cancel out

4^4 * (4^4 * (1 + 4^1))

[*]Simplify the denomintor:
4^8 * (1 + 4^1)

4^8 * 5

[*]Realise that 4^8 = 2^16.

[*]The denominator becomes 2^16 * 5

[*]Cancel out 2^16 from the numerator and denominator:

2^(21-16) / 2^(16-16) * 5

2^5 / 5

You are done.

4^4*(4^4 + 4^5) = 4^8 + 4^9 = 2^16 + 2^18 = 2^16*(1 + 2^2). You should be able to figure out the rest.

Basically all you need to know, in addition to the multiplication and division rules for exponents.

This clearly proves 1 = 0.9999......

1=1.
