Aftermarket video cooling

I'm pondering an Accelero S1 v.2 for my HD4850.
I've read many complaints about the ram heatsinks not sticking well...even after properly following instructions on cleaning of the memory chips.
What I was wondering, are those memory heatsinks really necessary if one doesn't overclock the videocard?

Depends on the card. On a 4850... You don't need them no If you have a handful though, go ahead and stick em

The case it's in is a LL V1000B, so basically, if they did come unstuck I suppose I wouldn't have to worry about them falling off?
Perhaps aftermarket TIM would help secure them if the tape didn't?

Well I got the Accelero installed & mounted a Scythe fan (unknown model) I had lying around on it.
To my disbelief the temperature of the card dropped 30c & it's QUIET!

Yes, this will work on the 4870 as well.

Now...back to me...hehehe.
This card is installed in a LL V1000B. I have a fan on the side panel blowing in & a blowhole fan as an exhaust.
I was wondering, since the fan mounted on the Accelero is blowing "down" onto the card, am I creating turbulence in there? Would I be better off with just a vent cover on the side to draw in air, then exhaust it out the top?
Thanks.

I don't think it's anything to worry about. I had a similar but swapped setup (accelero S1 with side fan and bottom mount PSU exhauting) and it didn't seem to matter

So you basically noticed no change in temps by having a side panel fan or not?

If you want really want to apply heatsinks and get "semi-permanent" adhesion with great conductivity (despite cost), mix some of the arctic cooling thermal adhesive with some arctic silver 5. I'd do about 1/3 adhesive to 2/3 AS5 and see how it works. Typically, people say half and half works great (I've done about that ratio), but not everyone is so precise with their measurements, so its better to start with less adhesive and see how it goes. Also, when you try to remove something, don't just pull it off... let it get hot, turn off the computer, then twist gently. I've personally had luck with this. Also be sure to properly clean all surfaces before applying....ArctiClean or the Tuniq stuff both work well from my experience. Just my 2 cents.

No sorry, the side fan was intake and PSU fan exhaust. What didn't seem to matter was any turbulence created by the PSU fan and nearby GPU fans blowing in opposite directions

I guess the easiest way for me to check will be to disconnect my side panel fan & see if the temps rise on the GPU.
