So I'm thinking that a rear view camera would be a good idea for me - I live in Chicago and am possibly the worst parallel parker in the world - just a terrible judge of how far back the car behind me is.

How difficult is it to install? I'd need to replace my radio (double din), which I want to do anyway. Can I use pretty much any receiver with a screen, or do I need to look for one with special connections?

I'm hoping to spend <$200 on the whole thing. Any recommendations on receiver / camera? I don't mind tinkering around myself, as long as I can't **** anything up too badly in the process.

TIA!

You need to make sure whatever headunit you buy has the capability of accepting a back-up camera. Most manufacturers offer them as accessories - just do your research. Some headunits accept universal cameras, some are proprietary.

Most mount on your license plate area - you just have to run the wires underneath your carpet and into the back of your car. Most also have you tap into your reverse light wire - that is what will trigger your camera to turn on.

Concerning your price - I don't think $200 will cut it.......the Pioneer backup camera is $180 by itself :O

DX has a ton of cheap parts, with free shipping - if you don't mind waiting awhile from China:

There are a lot of ways to install a rear-view camera. You can get a license plate frame camera, or drill the camera into your car. You can also get a wireless model, which are much easier to install:

For the monitor, they make rearview screens in various sizes, or rearview mirrors with integrated screens. And like you mentioned, you can do a double-din type of thing, or even a single-DIN with a motorized screen. This is the double-din model I'm looking at for my car: ($400)

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_130X350BHS/Pioneer-AVH-X3500BHS.html

Includes Bluetooth (wireless audio streaming & hands-free calling), HD Radio, and rearview camera input. The only rear snag you'll run into, as Ryan mentioned, is getting everything under $200 - even the cheap double-din screens on DX are around the $200+ range by themselves.

Oh I see, the 1500 doesn't have HD radio, sirius or bluetooth. Maybe I can find a 2500 or last year's model for cheap.

Isn't there like half a foot in distance from the front seat to the rear bumper? Shouldn't be hard to park.

Except that when you're trying to back out and you're parked next to a giant truck and an SUV, you're basically blind :hmm:

Most of their stuff on Amazon is 3.5-4 stars, so it's probably fine for its cost. I have a Dual brand H/U (read: cheap) on my boat and it's been fine for the several years I've had it.

It appears your primary goal is to spend as little as possible (not an insult - I'm the same way) so it's always going to be a bit of a crap shoot on quality.
