After upgrade W2K Pro to XP Pro, no modem dial tone

The modem has worked for years, it's a wonderfully cheap IBM ISA 56K. After the upgrade I found the Dialup Networking was messed up, with some incorrect registry settings that I had to fix.

KB 329441 was right on target.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329441

I don't think that part of the problem has anything to do with this part but I include it in case.

The problem now is no dial tone. The line has dialtone, I can plug it into a phone or into my laptop modem and it has dialtone. I can't get dialtone passed through the modem into the phone, either. So you would say the modem was broken, but I used it just before the upgrade, and it's 5 years old and never failed, and the day after the upgrade I go to use it and its dead.

I don't know where to go from here

WXP SP2 also fouled up my older modem. You may want to wipe the hard drive and clean install WXP SP1. Removing WXP SP2 does not fix my problem.

Your driver is incorrect. What is it listed as under Device Manager? If it's something like "Best Data Fax Modem" (or something totally unrelated to IBM), then Windows has used the driver it thinks is best and fouled it up.

You'll either need to reinstall the driver or force it back by hand by selecting the correct one when updating the driver from Device Manager.

You know it might not be a bad idea just to shell out the $10 and pick up a new modem.

Saw a few PCI USR5610B hardware modems at Circuit City last week for $10. Used to sell for $80.

won't even consider reinstalling XP - it was a trip.

And I fear that even though I generally keep manuals and disks etc, this modem is maybe 7 or 8 years old. I have looked around, but to find a disk for it . . .

It's listed as "IBM 56K Windows Modem" in Device Manager. It shows the driver as System32\drivers\modem.sys

I've googled for a driver and it's hard to find anything that looks definitive.

It was the first 56k I had, got it for $8 and it worked like a dream up till now. Long ago got broadband, but I was always fond of it.

I found on the bottom of the modem - "Sportster 0467" and "Made for IBM by USRobotics.

So I thought it should be easy to find the right driver. NOT!

USR site, I tried all kinds of versions of IBM 56K Sportster 0467, along with various inf's I found on different websites like wmmodem.inf that they said would do it. Nothing.

And what is the DriverGuide.com site? It's everywhere I look and I tried their free registration and went around in circles. Looked like all they wanted was to fish me into product surveys and stuff.

might just be coincidence

this IS a coincidence . . . i was reinstalling [clean OS install] Win2K LAST week and my modem failed. Just not "recognized" any longer . . . i moved it to another PCI slot and Win2K tried to install a driver; then 'dead' again . . . so i spend $20 for a new one . . .

[big deal - it died . . . . the funeral is tomorrow] :Q

:D

send paypal to me as condolences

After reading more, I'm guessing that if modem.sys is the driver, that's the vanilla driver Windows gave it?

so i guess it is worth it to you to troubleshoot a $10 modem.

how does it look in device manager?

have you tried the win2k driver?

does it show in BIOS?

have you tried another PCI slot (and cleaned the contacts)?

What does "diagnostics" in device manager say . . . is your modem 'communicating' properly?

IF everything 'shows' and is 'right' it may just be coincidence that your HW failed [no dial tone]

and if you REALLY want to see . . . set up a small partition with Partition Magic for Win2K just to see if the modem is functioning.

me, i'd toss it :p
[for $20, max]

i guess i did toss mine :Q

It's ISA, not PCI

And yes, I do tend to stay with troubleshooting longer than it deserves. Part of it is I want to learn more.

I did Query the modem and it indicated the modem responds OK. The log is full of stuff, including SUCCESS messages.

How would I get the W2K Driver? Would it be on the W2K CD that I still have?

Forget it? Why? XP won't work with ISA?

It really has been a nice little modem. One time I thought I should get what all the jocks had, and lusted after a USR Cadillac model and got it and darn, it didn't connect as fast as the IBM. So I returned it.

ISA is really really old . . . you may find an 'xp workaround' but i doubt it . . . and you don't even know if it failed or not.

seriouisly, the el cheapo winmodems work great now and support v92 and the other goodies your ancient modem does not.

Toss it like a salad. You'l feel much better afterwards.

ISA are 2 generation older interconnects PCI-Express>PCI>ISA
Modems are so cheap nowadays that you can just buy an XP compatible and leave the hassle

You don't have to upgrade your motherboard unless you have no PCI slot left.
The newegg cheap modem looks alright, it supports v92 though I don't know what that meant, can't be bad anyway

If you upgrade your motherboard, you might just buy a new PC because you need a new processor, new memory. If you give us your specs we might be able to find you an slightly newer but still old motherboard that supports your CPU and RAM

i got a Best Data Winmodem {Smart Link HPS-52] from Curcuit City for $19.95 last week . . . i went to the B&M . . . didn't try online cause i couldn't wait - i am stuck on dial-up.

and your ABIT KT7RAID is HALF as old as your modem ;)
[that's ancient in computer terms]

Does your BIOS recognize your modem?

And what does it say in Device Manager - Properties - Diagnostics - "Query Modem" ???

the NewEgg one is probably OK. V92/v44 are the latest standards.

Best possible solution. A friend down the road gave me his. We got cable internet on our little dirt road back in the woods a while back and everyone jumped on. So I figured there must be some out-of-use modems somewhere along the road. He was happy to let it go.

Installed it and it got out of bed and went right to work. Didn't even install, actually, just put it in the slot and Windows found it.

Everyone, thanks a lot for your input. I did learn some more, something very valuable and useful to me.
