After the upgrade...what will I do with Vista...?

I wanted to know if I could install the copy of Vista ultimate to another computer that I might build in the future as I won't be using it after I had upgraded my system to Win7 ultimate.

I know that, legally, I can't transfer the copy from one machine to another, but I'm curious, despite the legality, would it still be possible to do so or would some DRM technology in Vista prevent me from doing so if I should install vista ultimate on another machine?

Just wanted to know in case anyone out there has had any attempt of transfering one oem copy to another machine.

It's a legal double-whammy. Not only can you not transfer an OEM copy to another machine, but it sounds like you're using an upgrade edition of Win7. Using an upgrade edition of Windows means that you're surrendering your license for the prior operating system, in return for not having to pay full-price for a full copy. In short: this isn't something you should be doing.

EULA garbage aside, you can try, but it'll most likely fail activation.

You are only licensed to use it. You don't own it. But, you can also keep it as is, all installed in the same machine on a separate HDD and have it as a backup should your new system fail. With a mobile rack that is an easy switch.

No what I'll be getting a full OEM install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Becuase, from what I remember from the agreement with the Windows 7 upgrade, is that I'll be getting a full OEM copy of Win 7 Ultimate by MS.

Let us know what you get. I haven't seen any of the "free" Win7 certificates, so it's not clear to me how they will work. Normally, an "upgrade" would require that you sacrifice your old (Vista) license, and an OEM version would require a complete reinstall to an empty disk. It'll be interesting to see what folks get.

As noted, since the Vista license is OEM, Microsoft's EULA would forbid transfer of the Vista license to a different PC. So the question is kinda' moot if you are going to follow the EULA.

Alright but you guys are going to have to wait until November, which is when I should be getting the OEM copy from Microsoft. So until then, we can either keep bumping this thread or wait for me to just start a new one that references to this thread.
