Hey all, I got a weird one.

I was putting a disc in my HTPC (working great for over a year) and when I touched the case, there was a static discharge. The computer froze after this, but no biggie becasue it's happened before. I tried a hard reset and it wouldn't even start. Then I started messing with it and it got weird:

After I physically cut power to it (unplug or kill switch on PSU), once I reconnect the power, the computer turns on BY ITSELF without me hitting the power button or anything. It tries to power on for a few seconds (all fans spinning, Blu-ray drive flashes) but it never gets to POST because it then powers itself down after a few seconds. No amount of hitting the power button gets it to turn back on, I have to disconnect the power and then reconnect and the same thing happens. I also can't get it to stop trying to power on by itself. Here's what I've tried (all had no effect):

  • New PSU
Reset CMOS (removed battery & clear CMOS jumper)
Disconnected all unnecessary power loads (drives, fans, video card, etc.)
    Removed memory
Physically unhooked the power button from the mobo jumper pins..still happens

My thought is that it's got to be a bad mobo. Just want to confirm that I'm not missing anything stupid. My computer:

Mobo: M2N-SLI Deluxe
CPU: Brisbane 5400+
Memory: 2GB Corsair ValueSelect (DDR2 800)
PSU: Antec Earthwatts 430

What do you mean no biggie? ESD is a very big problem, and if you can feel/see it the ESD is in the thousands of Volts..much more than any component in your system can handle. The fact that it's happened more than once and your system kept running means your lucky. And yea, it sounds like you smoked the mobo..

as for the system powering on when 1st plugged in, one of my systems (intel D865PERL) with 2 different antec PSUs (trio 550w, basiq 500w) does the same thing.. system powers up all fans, drives etc for 2 seconds, then shuts off.. only does this when initially plugged in or turned off then on via the PSU master switch on the back of the PSU. however it then will power up via front panel button normally afterwards. I figure this is by design (self test?) or just the way the PSU interacts with particular mobos.

anyone else get this quick power on/off when a PSU is 1st plugged in?

for static shock, what ch33zw1z says is true, static, even just to the case, isnt good. in theory, the static should be dissipated right to ground (through the outlets ground pin) in a properly grounded system and not interfere with the internal electronics but I wouldnt really trust it. and the fact your rig locks up when this happens may indicate some sort of grounding issue. maybe the outlet isnt properly grounded? or you have some weird ground loop between connected devices (receiver/TV) that needs to be addressed.

last resort, pull the vid and sound card, see if it posts (youll need to listen for a beep as obviously you wont have video).

but it does sound like you smoked to mobo :(
