I actually seemed to have this same problem from a previous reformat/reinstall, however, this time it actually mattered..

I just reformatted the other day, and transferred over music/pictures/videos/documents I was saving over to my 80gig backup drive. (I need to get a bigger drive... lol) After the reformat, the only thing I could read was the folder that I had put all of the new files I had just copied over.

EVERYTHING on the drive previously, the files visible and file sizes confimable, were unable to be read. I'm out of town right now, but I believe the error was that access was denied.

Any ideas how to get my data to be readable again?

What file system?
NTFS? Did you agree to copy NTFS file permissions?

Could be a bad disk too.

Then it's probably not related to permissions...I don't know, maybe disk is bad?
Check hard drive cable maybe it's bad?
