hello all. this just happened to me about 15 minutes ago. heres what i was doing at the time:

installed Spector Pro on XP, removed it after 30 minutes and it saying it had been disabled. spent about 1 hr deleting the remaining files and wearching forever to remove all traces.

the installed Home Keylogger which by the reviews, there is nothing wrong with it, of course it comes up as a virus but it works very well.

also to straighten some things out, i have one 250gb drive which has XP and Vista on it on seperate partitions, i am dual booting and have a seagate 750gb a the "backup" drive. both XP and Vista were set to save anything and everything into the seagate drive. ONLY the Documents Backup folder is gone, every other folder in the Seagate drive is present.

and also i installed the new Nvidia Nforce drivers and i rebooted right away, i booted into XP and i clicked My Documents and nothing was present i the folder. went into My Computer and now my Seagate 750GB drive shows up as 650gb free (698 was the actual size)

so about 100GB of my Documents includning Music, Pictures, and every downloaded movie or game i had is all gone. forever i assume.

i have a back up of all tht from january 2008 and just a feew weeks ago i burtn all my games and most of my movies. so im not too mad.

but id still like to get to the bottom of this. could it have been the many files that AVG found coupled with Spector Pro as trojans, or the Nvidia driver install?

the keylogger does not seem like the culprit to me since i had it running since this morning to monitor my sister.

any help or input appreciated.

Your description of the change in disk free space makes it sound like the data is, indeed, "gone", rather than it being just a Security Permissions issue with the "My Documents" folder.

If you want to try to recover the data, you should STOP using the computer. Continuing to use the computer will decrease the odds of data recovery. On a different computer, download a data recovery program (such as GetDataBack) and install the software on the other computer. Then attach the problematic hard drive as a secondary or external hard drive (using a USB adapter cable or an external USB housing) and have the data recovery software scan the hard drive for those files. GetDataBack is a paid program and you'll have to buy it to do the actual recovery. There are other programs available, too, as well as some free ones.

ok well i used GetDateBack and i got back about 90% of everything i lost. except my Music, Videos, ISOs, and my DVDs. they were all corrupt and when opened thru Nero which forced them to open, they were all picture files from my computer. so what happened is the Media files of those types got corrupted somehow. the file associations are right but they Media Player gives a file error.

also i have the Seagate drive hooked up as a slave in my PC and i was using GetDataBAck running it form my master drive.

Glad you salvaged some. It is very possible that SpectorPro and AVG do not get along at all.
