After I installed new ECS k7s5a...

After I use the installed the new board do I have to reinstall the operating system? Can I directly boot into my previously installed win2k?

I just bought ECS k7s5a and AMD XP1800. But after I install everything I can not boot my computer. After system finished detect Win2K seems to start. But after second screen I got the error message,

STOP: 0X0000007B (..., ..., ..., ....) <- "some other address"
INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

Before it flash to second screen I think I saw one error message about I/O error. But it flashed too quickly I am not quite sure what exactly it said. I did not reinstall my old OS.

While I can use boot disk to boot without any problem.

One more question. If I have PC100 RAM can I set CPU to 133/133?

Thanks a lot.

Yes.

In nearly every mobo change I've done I've had to reinstall the OS or the system would occasionally hang...even when moving to another board with the same chipset! IMHO it's not worth going through the trouble of trying to make it work. If you don't have critical data on the drive I would repartition, format and install the new OS.

That's my .02😎

You can switch mobo's without reinstalling if you prep your OS on your old board by removing all of the mobo drivers, and it still won't work if the chipsets are very different. Going from intel to via??? No No, not going to happen. I tried win2k from intel to ali, and had to format.

And if you set the cpu to 133/133 you will be overclocking the ram. I doubt you will get this from most ram, you might if it is good high quality ram.

Thanks for the infor. By the way, I saw this board has a onboard modem setting in bois. Does that mean it also comes with a onboard modem as long as the onboard Lan? My previous modem won't fit in this board. This board does not have that kind of slot. 🙁

I had a WinME system and switched from an Intel BX chipset board to a Via Kt133a board and the OS actually worked better afterwards. I stopped getting blue-screens during ATI TV Wonder captures 🙂 No special prep either...unless making a full backup counts! Of course, this is highly likely to be the exception rather than the rule.

You probably use that setting to enable your AMR modem after you plug it into that little slot above your AGP...if you can find one to purchase somewhere. It probably costs just as much as a new cheap PCI modem 🙁

Win ME is more forgiving than 2k. Besides, if you switch your ME to a new system, and I reinstall an NT based system, who do you think will have to reinstall next....😉

I'm on XP Pro now, and after a fresh install I always make a "clean OS" Ghost before I start loading drivers and apps on. Then I make a Ghost of my loaded system. So, not too many full reinstalls for me 😉

nweaver, I have two memories. One is 256M PC133 and another one is128M PC100. The PC100 is a very good one. Do you think it is better that I OC the PC100 or I simply only use the 256M PC133? If I use both of them and OC the PC100 is there the chance I may damage both of them? If not I will just go ahead to OC the PC100. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Actually, the K7S5A is SiS 735 based. But it still isnt a good idea to change platforms without reinstalling

THere is a new/forthcoming FAQ that talks about imaging one installation of Win2K for use on other machines. It mentioned what prep work you should do to ensure a successful transplant in the newer/other systems. It has tips like making all of our dirvers generic and such. Hopefully, AndyHui has posted it by now (it may mention Ghost in the title).

I haven't had the opportunity to try the procedure yet, but will definitely give it a run when I go AMD SMP.

Thank you for all the useful information. Anyway I reinstalled my OS. 🙁 Now It seems fine. I have no problem to boot my system. I oc my pc100 ram to 133 and I did not see the computer crash on me so far. I have played Heroes IV for hours and it also seems fine.

I do have another two questions,

1. Before system boot into win2k, there is one page shows an error message "Disk I/O error = 0008001". It flashed very quickly I am not sure whether I got the right number. But I did not see any effect of it. While definetly something is wrong. Any comments?j

2. Regarding CPU temperature. I have 47C unloaded and 50~51C loaded(when I play Heroes IV). Is this normal?

Thanks a lot.
