How does this work (I live in georgia). I googled and found nothing but conceal and carry stuff. I have no desire to carry a gun around with me... but I would like one in my apartment. For a handgun it seems like you have to be 21... does that apply if you don't carry it?

i don't think it matters whether or not your carrying it. the only thing that matters is who owns it, and how old they are. so you're outta luck. just stick with a hockey stick, or a nice baseball bat. :)

Yes it applies.. you have to be 21 to purchase a handgun in most states, although it varies. Rifles are usually 18, but a rifle wouldn't do you much good in home defense.

Judging by the tone of your post, you would be doing yourself and others good if before you even considered buying a gun, taking some safety courses, and talking to some people who know guns (shop owners, etc).

I've been hunting w/ mom's boyfriend since I was about 10. I'm very familiar with guns and gun safety.

I suppose I'd be best of picking up a .22 rifle for the closet.

Still, It'd still be cool to pull a M1 Garand on a guy who just broke into your house.

You can probably still legally buy one from a private seller or at a gun show. The regulations in those cases aren't usually the same for retail sales. Of course it varies from state to state, so check beforehand.

It sounds like a shotgun would be best for your situation.

If you can't own a handgun legally, then a shotgun is your best bet. A .22 rifle has about as much stopping power as a BB gun unless the shot is well placed, which it probably won't be.

Thats certainly legal......

Well, it's not like breaking into people's apartments is legal. ;) I was joking though, an unmodified shotgun would be my suggestion. And don't just buy it and keep it in the apartment, take it out and get comfortable with it.

Yes, make it easier for the robber to kill you. Good plan.

i'm sure you've heard the statistic that your gun is 40 some odd times more likely to be used against yourself or a family member than against a burglar, but it's bogus.

Who's to say the robber won't already be armed?

If you're intent is self defense, you're only 19 and you live in an apartment... I would reccomend a shotgun. 20ga or 12ga. A .22 will do next to nothing for stopping power and STOPPING is what you want to do if someone is posing a threat to you. A .22 and pretty much every other bullet out there is likely to pver penetrate and go through walls. AND if you miss, it's certainly going to go through a few walls and this will put your neighbors at risk. This is a BIG no-no. A shotgun is less likely to penetrate walls it will have good stopping power.

If you want a smaller shotgun... look at AOW (Any Other Weapons). Mossberg makes a nice 12guage AOW called the 590 Compact "Cruiser". It's small enough to tuck into a closet or under a couch. The shorter barrel would be better for close spaces than a full length rifle or shotgun barrel. And, its still going to have the stopping power of a 12 guage. Granted, firing a 12 ga shell from such a small firearm is going to have a hellova kick.

ALSO REMEMBER: If you're smart --- you've got insurance. EVERYTHING you own is replaceable. Your life is not. If you pull a weapon, you had BETTER be prepared to fire it with the intent to harm someone. If you don't, THEY will. Think fast. Decide if it's worth it. Pick your moment. Be prepared to live with any consequences.
