For me, he epitomized the phrase, "The pen is mightier than the sword."
Crazed, ignorant, racist, profoundly stupid MAGA militia types will come and go. From the Know Nothing party through the KKK to the Proud Boys, those who benefit from but don't even begin to understand, let alone enbrace the strength and wisdom of our highest Amerian ideals, ideals we have struggled to live up to for nearly 250 years now, will episodically poke their pointy little heads out of their insular burrows of ignorance, dress up in camo and grab a semi-automatic penis extender, and flock like the low information, easily duped lemmings they are to a deeply cynical third rate carney barker like Trump, and attempt to derail basic human progress.
They will scare the bejeezus out of the rest of us, and we will be slow and a more than a bit disorganized in response, but eventually, WE THE PEOPLE will respond.
And as long as folks like Mr. Tom Toles are there to eloquently, and with the humor inextricably embedded in taking the piss of the ignorant, shine a light on that ignorance, the racist roaches, scared little insects all, will scatter and WE . . . WILL . . . PREVAIL.
There is a virus abroad in our republic: Racism. Covid pales in comparison. First Nixon, then Reagan, and now Trump have taken turns being the Pied Piper of the racists, not with a flute, but with a dog whistle.
This election, all of us of good will must STAND AND BE COUNTED, even as the reprehensible racist Republicans do everything they can to make sure many of us are NOT counted. If we collectively answer the call, then enough of us WILL BE COUNTED, and the long, slow trek back to compassion and inclusion will commence.
It can be no other way:
