After boot up, screen goes black and then....

Hello all,

Here is the problem my friend is having with his pc. On boot up, it gets to the desktop. Then once on the desktop the screen goes black and then you hear a grinding hiss that comes out of the speakers. I think it sounds like a hard drive issue, but I find it weird that he gets to the desktop and it happens. Any help would be appreciated.

system specs? any recent changes or additions to his pc?

No new additions as far as hardware. I will have to get the specs and repost soon.
