After a clean XP install.

Alright, a friend of mine has a Dell D2400. Last night we ran a restore disk, and then installed all drivers that came with the machine and brought it back up to date with windows updates.

Okay, first off, when the NIC is set to 100mpbs, it cannot resolve anything, and there is no internet connection, but when it's set to 10mpbs, it works.

This annoyed me, but for whatever reason, while downloading all the Windows XP updates, we got speeds around 500K from microsoft, so I wasn't worried. After all the updates, she was able to access the college network, and now gets speeds like she was on a dialup, but she's on a T1 college network. She has three roomates, and all get normal fast speeds.

I don't understand why the NIC can't resolve a connection unless it's set to 10mbps, and I can't understand why she gets such slow speeds. What can be toggled or changed in Windows XP to get it back to normal. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

10 vs 100 when dealing with the internet should not make a difference unless she's pulling over 10 (doubtful). It almost sounds like a compatiability problem. I would contact the school's helpdesk and see if the admins can be of any help. Do you have a different nic you can try in her machine?

I go to the same school, and our tech people are pretty bad. Anyway, I'm not sure what to do at this point. I'm just going to play around with some settings when I get back to her room.

I may be able to try a different NIC, i'll have to look around for one. She can spend the $40 if she wants too. The Dell is only a year old, I really doubt it would be the NIC, but never know.

Thanks.
