After 8 years of waiting, finally getting Broadband (cable)

The moment has finally arrived. After 8 years of using dial up and the sweat and agony of wanting broadband, I'm finally about to take the plunge. I checked dslreports.com and it indicates that I'm too far from the CO to get DSL but am able to get Cable internet via Comcast.

They're running a promotion right now, which includes
* $49.95 installation (regular $99)
* $21.95 for 4 months internet access ($45.95 afterwards) with lease modem
* Basic Local cable, which is $4 for 4 months and $17/month afterwards

You have to subscribe to some cable service in order to get the $21.95/month for 4 months. You can opt not to but the price for internet alone is comparable to internet + basic local cable television.

Has anyone have luck with negotiating a better deal? I just saw their $19.99 for 6 months but the deadline for that has passed. I was thinking of getting my own modem, but for $3/month (the cost to lease the modem), it's not a big deal.

Thoughts anyone?

edit: Seems there aren't any contracts requirments either 🙂

I've always had luck with calling them and lying about what I've heard. Did this when I came back from college over the summer, claimed I saw a Free Installation and First Month free with $10 off the next 3 months, and they gave it to me.

I've done the Free Installation thing at least 3 times, and i've probably gotten about 3 months free with a lot of cheaper months. We don't have it now at home (back on campus), but from what I remember RR service was Free Installation and $10/off the first 3 months, with $45/month following.

nice to see we have crooks amongst us 😛

They didn't have a "DIY Install"? RoadRunner did... instead of free installation, they gave me a month credit😀 All that was involved was hooking up the modem to my computer. The installer had already connected the coax to the modem😛

I waited for many years as well. I thought it would never come to my area. It finally did and man was it worth the wait.

My cable rocks!

On a related topic does anyone know how one would install cable internet if you don't have any cable plugs in your house? 😱

My house is one of the older ones and up on the hills.

You have to put some in. A lot of times the cable company will just drill a hole through the house and run in the cable from outside. If you don't like the idea of drilling a hole in the house, you can try to run it inside from above or below yourself and put jacks in the wall (or pay somebody to do it). Generally the cable company won't do this for free or at all.
