I just got a D6U from IBM.com (1.4, SXGA+, M8-32, 40GB-5400rpm). A friend brought it to Vancouver from the US and shipped it to me ¡V total cost $2855 cdn. The D6U is not available in canada and neither is the 58U so to get a SXGA+ screen I would have had to buy at least a 96U which would be $5000 after tax. Not Likely!
Thoughts after 3 days:
- The SXGA+ is wonderful ¡V I don¡¦t know how I survived on XGA all these years.
- Downside of the panel is that it is not all that bright and the viewing angles seem to be not all that hot although about what I am used to ¡V I expected better.
- I do have one dead pixel in the upper left part of the screen. For me this is liveable as this machine is unavailable in Canada so I would have to reship back to the states to replace and for that one pixel it¡¦s not worth it. If this were a XGA pixel I would probably have a problem but at the pixel size on the SXGA+ pixel I can¡¦t see it unless I look for it.
- The PM processor is amazing. Moving from a P4M1.8 I can¡¦t believe how little heat is shed and have yet to hear the fan.
- I have not had a peep out of either the power brick or the unit itself (the buzzing that old spooky had)
- Wireless ¡V Intel Centrino wireless solution is std and I have to say it worked out well. I have picked out a hotspot at work I didn¡¦t detect before.
- The 5400 rpm drive is dead quiet and quite responsive after working with 4200 drives for years.
- I got the unit with 256MB memory so it was a bit sluggish at first but once I got 512 in it, it became quite zippy.
- Thinklight is cool¡K.lappy with xenon lights ?º
- keyboard¡K..well nothing needs to be said there.
- As noted by others, the right side of the keyboard is slightly squishy as is the plastic brace above the optical drive.
- I bought this T40 not with gaming being a priority although I like to have the M9 over the M7 although I have not had time to play with any games yet.
Overall I am blown away by this laptop. I have not played with a D600 but I can definitely recommend the T40.
