Any Ideas?

I know many of you guys that have multiple systems on one line ( i only have a 1.2 athlon and a 2.8 P4 on this one..and it did it before..even w/ a P3-450...switched out monitors, video cards, entire systems...its the line...) & many of you run a UPS of some sort..

Any other ideas?

The ones posted are very very expensive new (far out of my reach) and i am unsure of which one of those listed i should get (leaning towards Liebert but i have no idea which one off of the auctions)...if anyone can help me i'd be gladly appreciated...i can litereally HEAR the static coming from my monitors..surprisingly my speakers have not been popping that much..but the monitor is like 1/2 gone w/ static as i type this...i dont know why its been so bad lately but i am really worried about my hardware now..before i could ignore it..but this has been going on for about 10 hrs straight today..:/

thank you everyone!

Well the person said that i need a particulr *kind* of UPS...ones that have a line *cleaner*[edit: Auto-Voltage Regulation?][edit: He said i need a "ferroresonant based UPS system."
-...essentially taking the electricity and removing the over/under volting....would a regular APC do something of that sort?

And how much *load* (VA) should i get for a P4 system w/ a 465W PSU and a 1.2 Athlon system w/ a 350W PSU (total W = 915W)

Like for example..what's the difference between APC 1000VA and APC1000VA white

[edit] Perhaps instead of a UPS one of these Power Conditioning

I'm just really confused and annoyed at this problem. I dont want to buy a UPS only to find out that it hasn't solved the issue. Thank you everyone!

Hmm.. my work place has a number of these models(actually the 500VA) model attached to our Cisco routers and switches out in our branches, and the units have automatically switched over to battery during low-voltage periods, so I'd think they would.

You can get Line Conditioners though, such as APC's Line-R 600(they also make a 1250 model). Perhaps an email in to APC's sales support email might be a good bet to ask your question? 😉

Edit: Can you tell I'm a little biased on a particular brand? 😀 Comes from lots of good experience and absolutely ZERO problems with them honoring warranties, from the simple SurgeArrests up to the rackmount UPSs - no bad experiences ever. 🙂

During your post I emailed APC with a very detailed description of what i have running, have had running, and will continue running on the outlet, the problem at hand, and what i should get.

I do not mind you being biased to a particular brand because you obviously have a lot of experience ("networking man 😉 ) in the field and it is great to hear such positive feedback on a particular brand.

Through more reading i think a line conditioner(the 1200VA model) might be what I need as compared to a UPS...the problem is not that i dont have power..just that it is spiking everywhere 🙂

Either way i will keep you all updated.

Thank you Networkman in particular 🙂

1000 VA would probably be good size for your needs, while still allowing for about 20-30% future expansion without sacrificing runtimes too much. If the power is as bad as it sounds where you are, you'll want to connect as many of your high-ticket items to the unit as possible anyway.

The difference between those two units, as far as I can tell is the color and form factor. beyond that, they seem to be pretty much identical in capabilities.

On another note, I've got an APC 3000 (rackmount unit) that I could probably let go of for pretty cheap. Only catch is that the thing *requires* a dedicated 30 amp circuit all to itself (twistlock plug.)

The reason i asked about those 2 models was b/c there appears to be a $400 difference between the 2 and i cannot figure it out :Q

I would love to buy that 3000 unit but I only have normal sockets nearby 🙁 🙁

Funny thing is that now everything has been fine for about ~2 hrs. *sigh* Gotta love it.

Either way, I believe maybe i should give the line-interference unit a go and see if that fixes it. If that doesn't then I'll look more into UPS i guess. of course this is pending the official APC response to my question 😀

Thank you everyone 🙂

Dear Robert:

Thank you for contacting us on November 30, 2003.

You wrote about voltage regulation and noise suppression.

Robert, I recommend a Back UPS unit for this issue. Some models have voltage
regulation and noise suppression, and in addition will go to battery operation
if the voltage becomes out of range. The models which have voltage regulation
are Backups Models Pro, Pro USB, RS, LS, and XS. All Backups models have noise
suppression and surge suppression.

It has been a pleasure to serve you. If you have any additional questions please
feel free to contact our Customer Solutions Team again at

Hello,

I wanted to ask a question about a line interference problem that i have been
having and I wanted to be pointed in the proper direction towards what item I
should buy.

I live in a finished basement of a home and through various sytems, monitors,
setups, there has always been a bit of electrical interference present. This was
most noticeable by *pops* over my speakers. Another annoying, and more serious,
problem was the fact that every now and again the bottom 1/5th of the monitor
would become full of static (horizontal in nature). Keep in mind that various
setups and monitors have been tested.

Well this problem over the course of about 5 years has increased in frequency
and now roughly 1/2 of the monitor screen becomes garbled with static
periodically. Lately, this issue has lasted for as long as a day at a time. I
believe the problem is over-volting but I am not sure and a check by my
electrical company would be too expensive without a fixed quote on the amount
necessary.

With this in mind i began looking to buy a UPS that would reduce this signal
interference. Is there a UPS made by your company that should regulate this
voltage and allow me to draw *clean* power through the UPS, I was told I would
need to buy a "ferro-resonant based UPS system".

Or would i be better off getting a line conditioner?

There are now 2 Personal Computers on the one outlet in particular( one with a
465W power supply and one with a 350W power supply) but this problem occured a
few years ago when only a Pentium 3-based system( 250W power supply) was used.

I would just like to be pointed to the right product.

Thank You for your Time and have a nice day

-Robert M.

[EDIT] The only Affordable modles are the 240W or 280 W variations. THe ones i need (1000W) are far out of my reach @ $500...

Is it safe to plug in my 2 systems into a 280W UPS for voltage regulation, as long as i dont expect them to be held up during a power failure/surge?

All i need is the regulation

Mr. Moarcas,

The units that are suggested are the ones that will assist you the most in your
problem with over voltage because they do have AVR protection. A unit that you
may wish at looking at is the BR800 which as around 540 Watts of output power
capacity and only costs $189.99 on our website and is further cheaper through
our resellers or through our TRADE UPS programs if you do have an older unit.

Thanks,

Derek Huber

regulation/noise cancellation, as long as i dont expect them to be held up
during a power failure/surge?

All i need is to get rid of the interference and draw clean power. I do NOT
expect them to stay on during a power failure.

Thank You

-Robert

Well that's all folks! I'm going to give that a go once i have the money..interestingly enough..this hasn't occurred 1.5 days now...gotta love it :/
