IMO, I don't think "The Sixth Sense" is a real thriller...

Star Wars at 27? I thought it would have placed higher

and Speed made it? where's The Usual Suspects? and Titanic at 25 is probably the biggest joke

As I go down the list, I notice they sure had some interesting choices for "Thrillers" --

Ben-Hur?
E.T.?
Rocky?
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid?
Spartacus?
The Magnificent Seven?
Braveheart?
The Adventures of Robin Hood?

The above mentioned are ALL GREAT movies, but hardly thrillers, in my definition.

Putting Titanic over Star Wars was wrong, of course, by what I consider to be a thriller. I could go on with many more problems, but I won't. I do admit, however, that they really nailed the top 7!

Speed's a thriller?

Right...

When I think thriller I think Hannibal Lecter, Se7en, Malice, stuff like that.

I didn't get any chills or anything after watching TSS, but I kinda thought for a second. Then it went away.

I was glad to see Alien made the list. That is a great suspense movie... a really good look to it too. Scott and Gieger did a great job giving the movie a "feel" that made every frame very creepy.

Too bad the whole series went down the tubes right after Cameron took over. Man I hate that guy.

Someone else asked why ET was on the list. Well I remember seeing ET for the first time way back when, I was pretty young, and that movie scared the crap out of me. The scene towards the beginning where ET is in the shed and rolls the ball back to Elliot, creepy stuff for a young kid. Also, when the men in suits come to take ET away and he is all dried out and dying... that too is pretty scary stuff for a kid.

I thought they did a good job of finding movies that kind of defy the traditional sense of "scary and thrilling" to find movies that you wouldn't think are scary, but really are. Another good is example is the flying monkey scene in Wizard of Oz. Seems dumb now, but my dad still tells me about how that scene gave him nightmares when he was a little kid.

Its good to keep things in perspective.

It would have been a lot better had it not had the "i see dead people" line in the preview. That ruined it....

Too many thriller/sci-fi/mystery movies are simply ruined in the previews.

It seems that I read a Roger Ebert article stating that these AFI lists are composed by lots of very biased people with agendas to promote their own films. I think he went on to say that some of the people voting on the films in this list have admitted to not having seen most of the films on the list. Maybe thats why Star Wars was (in my opinion) placed so low, and why Titanic is so high.

Gladiator should have been on there somewhere. And I thought Jurassic Park would have been muh higher and Titanic much lower

I thought Gladiator fell into the category of 'Stupid Summer Movies' much like Independence Day.

Also, Aliens was better than Alien.

And why is Titanic there???????????????????????????

I don't know about "Gladiator" being a "stupid summer movie," I enjoyed it, and it's got a great story. Not quite sure how Gladiator didn't make the list when Braveheart did, they were similar enough in genre that you'd think they'd both be there.

I thought alien was much more "thrilling" then Aliens. Aliens was good (my favorte of the series), but it was more of a blend of sci fi/horror/action then Alien (a blend of sci fi/horror)

I did watch the special last night, my "movies to rent" list has about 60 titles on it now :D
