Radio Free Europe Western Press Review

Executive Summary: "[The] abandonment of the Afghans looks not only ill-advised, but a cynical betrayal."

Somebody dig up those rosy speeches about how we are going to stick with the Afghan people through thick and thin. If you beleived those speeches then, shame on you. If you believe those same rosy speeches now now with regard to our deep abiding friendship with the people of Iraq, shame on you also.

Hmm, I don't see us leaving. Would you care to offer substantial proof - from a non enemy of the US (European) site.

Well, pulling out 12 guys and a tank wouldn't make much news.

And, I wasn't aware that Britain was an enemy of the U.S....hmmmmm.

Now I'm confused. I thought we were there to rob them of their natural resources? Why just leave all that natural gas...other than the fact, of course, that there's plenty ot be found on these boards.

actually, HOP, the point of the post is that the promises are meaningless and people should not be deceived. I know an expert like you knows the truth; just reminding others to use their heads.

This is why we have no crediblity in the region. Everything we have ever done is seen as being self-serving, shallow, and hypocritical. One example: We screwed the Iraqi resistance against Sadaam in the '90s. The Arab people look more towards actions than words (this from an ex-Syrian, now very loyal American). They WILL NOT FORGET IT.

Huh? Are you confusing Iraq an Afghanistan again? Forchrissakes get a map, will ya?
Why don't you tell us what these "natural resources" are in Afghanistan..... What, Rice Pilau and rock? The odd piece of dried up manure that hasn't been re-used yet? OR the poppies? Yeah, now there's an idea.

Who's going to guard the poppy if we left? Or are the soldiers there too strung out to leave yet? Well hopefully they don't bring back another plauge of the big H like they did in Vietnam (Or was that the point?)

Four U.S. Soldiers Killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan, May 29 -- Four U.S. soldiers were killed in action in Afghanistan on Saturday, one of the biggest losses for American forces since the fall of the Taliban.

A brief statement from the U.S. military in Kabul said the soldiers were from the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force, Afghanistan, suggesting that it was Special Forces troops who were killed.

A spokeswoman said she had no more details about the incident, which brought to 90 the number of fatalities suffered by the Americans in Afghanistan, 56 of them in combat.

The soldiers were killed in the southern province of Zabol, where remnants from the ousted Taliban have staged a series of attacks in recent months. More than 700 people have been killed in violence across the country since last August, most of it blamed on Taliban and al Qaeda fighters bent on disrupting landmark elections due to be held in September.

The U.S. military has conceded that an insurgency concentrated in the south and east of the country has gathered strength in the last two months.

Also Saturday, seven Afghan soldiers and four Taliban guerrillas were killed in clashes in the southern province of Helmand, local officials said. About 20 government troops were also wounded in what appeared to be four simultaneous and coordinated attacks by suspected Taliban.

Helmand, Kandahar and Zabol used to be strongholds of the hard-line Islamic Taliban before it was ousted by U.S.-led forces in late 2001.

There are 20,000 U.S.-led soldiers in Afghanistan hunting remnants of the Taliban and al Qaeda.

Very astute of you, that is exactly the point. No one knows anything about this Country anymore, all core values have been thrown out the window with the bath water.
