These Afghanis, seriously.

I don't anticipate a "war" (really would just be a merciless bombing campaign followed by years of insurgent activity, like Afghanistan) with Pakistan anyway, but it's kind of depressing to see that with the US STILL IN Afghanistan they'd say this, not to mention Karzai even entertaining the question. Wouldn't a proper response have been "Are you crazy? Ask me something pertinent."

Politically speaking, you think Karzai had any other option but to give that response? The U.S. is supposed to be out of there in 2014, Pakistan is next door, and the region populace is overwhelmingly anti-American.

QFT, we had the perfect opportunity to bail and save face once OBL was slain. We might still be able to salvage our dignity if we wrap this up soon. Afghanistan is so backwards and worthless (save for opium).

One of the reasons for our sour relationship with Pakistan has to do with us trying to end the Taliban insurgency by striking militants in Pakistan (thus protecting Karzai's government). Fuck them all.

Its their land and they're willing to go holy shit insane for it. No matter how much you carpet bomb them, they will still fight and die for their lands. And Pakistan is no joke:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pakistan_and_weapons_of_mass_destruction

In addition:

"According to a 2001 Department of Defense report, China has supplied Pakistan with nuclear materials and has provided critical technical assistance in the construction of Pakistan's nuclear weapons development facilities, in violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, of which China is a signatory."

Karzai is trying to play all sides just as he always has. He's a loser, the only guy not important enough to be assassinated by the Taliban in the days leading up to the American invasion. He's repeatedly said that he supports the Taliban over the US. He's just a clown.

I would say I can't wait for the day we leave and he's drawn, quartered and dragged through the streets of Kabul, but We all know that won't happen. What a clusterfuck. We need to be out of that region yesterday. Let the Afghans sell all the weapons we gave them to the Pakistani insurgents, and then we'll see who's laughing.

Once the U.S. pulls out he is a dead man. He surely knows this and is trying to prevent the inevitable.

Afghanistan is ungovernable by any outside force. they were actually at their zenith immediately prior to the soviet invasion, due in no small part to soviet influence. It was reactionary forces that drew the soviets to invade, and those were the same forces we supported in making Afghanistan a pawn in the great game between the US and the soviets.

In retrospect, everybody would have been better off if we'd stayed out of it, particularly the Afghans themselves, but Zbig & then the neocon Reaganites had different ideas.

Few people realize that the Mujahedin we helped radicalize & supported back then are the same people who oppose us today.

The conduct of the Bush admin was atrocious all along, the kind of eyes wide shut arrogant blindness that only Neocons can possess, and that gross misconduct will shape our relationship with the whole region for decades to come.

There won't be any war with Pakistan. For better or worse, they'll be the primary influence in Afghanistan, just as they were before the invasion. In many respects, that's just self defense on the part of the Pakistanis, because the border with Afghanistan is an artifact of the marginal control of the British Raj, and in no way reflects the reality of the people who live on either side of it.

He's got a series of mansions in Dubai and a nest egg of nearly a billion dollars thanks to you paying your taxes. He'll leave when we leave.

Except for Jhhnn, all other poster place ALL blame on the leadership of Afghanistan and Pakistan. But until we realize that the strategy of Nato that is about 75% of the problem, we will continue to only waste blood and treasure while falling even further back than we are now.

Its not hard to understand why the Afghan people don't want us, as all we have given them is anarchy corruption and violence.

You're right. We never should have agreed to that compensation package for him though. A president salaried at ~$85 million a year in a country that basically doesn't collect taxes but relies on outside aid to pay it's bills is ridiculous. And the home's that the US purchased for him in the last 2 years in Dubai in order to "give him our assurance" that he would be taken care of for supporting us only acted as a reverse incentive.

I guess you went by the poster's names and not the content of their posts? No one in here attributed any blame for any of this to any party. Everyone is just saying we need to GTFO. I'm certain that Afghanistan and Pakistan will turn into a sparkling beacon of prosperity and freedom without NATO in there mucking everything up.

Where did that number come from, anyway?

I doubt it. Dudes got castles all over the world with money he got from USA, extorting various contractors and drug money. Whens the last time you heard of a billionaire getting assassinated? It just doesn't happen because they can buy safehaven all over.

The US can leave the area whenever it wants and for whatever reason. Afghanistan can not.

historians will look back on this and see the united states like a global HIV virus. we are systematically eliminating any leader opposed to us, and any country who doesnt like us is getting steamrolled. soon, the entire planet will be a nice new sticky parking lot of ass-fault and 90% of the population will live happily in our subsidized shoe boxes with black tar for grass.

It does crack me up to see Afghans living in our abandoned toilet trailers.

Should have gotten out after capping OBL. Unlike Iraq that country has zero chance of joining the modern world in our lifetimes.

Leave Afghanistan, cut off Pakistani aid, concentrate on trade/military relations with India.
