"After the Taliban's demolition (two years ago), their fascist brothers were installed into power for the second time and these religious fascist jihadis act in a more bloody and heinous way than their Taliban brethren," a statement issued by the Revolutionary Association of Afghan Women (RAWA) said Wednesday.

yep, news fair and balanced.....

I seriously doubt they can be as bad as the Taliban. However, even with the Taliban gone it is impossible to change the Afghanies cultural attitudes.

This group was the same group the Bush Administration used as sources when GWB talked about the brutality of the Taliban (rightfully so I should mention) and now since the group comes out with a statement against the present conditions of women under a pro-American regime they are some how to be discredited.....looks like selective hearing to me.

During the five-year rule of the Taliban, who seized power in 1996, women were banned from classrooms and workplaces and forced to wear the all-covering burqa veil in rarely permitted forays from home.

Since the collapse of the militia, women have slowly clawed back some of their rights, returning to jobs, schools and public life. But many oppressions remain.
Selective amnesia?

In the headlines they say that it is worse, yet the statement says that things are getting better. Attitudes do not just change overnight, but the statements indicate that change is happening.

HOw can something going positive be compared as going negative?

Just like having no solid evidence of someone having WMD indicates that they we KNOW that they have WMD for a fact.

Exactly. My point is not to critisize the US policy. I fully supported the invasion of Afghanistan and the liberation of the Afghans from despotic Taliban rule. I wanted to point out that by neglecting the situation there we are going to let it return to the previous state, something that is counterproductive to our interests and that will foster further resentment against the US, this time also from people who were previoulsy supportive of our actions.

I agree. It was indifference by the U.S. after the Soviets left, that contributed to the power vacuum which the Taliban occupied.

I thought we learned that lesson, but it seems there is some doubt, based on present policies.

Sometimes you make sense Red Dawn ;)

I'm pretty sure that a population that has spent generations with women as second class citizens isn't going to change overnight. How long did it take women to get equal rights in the US?

So LBBI: tell us how our neglect of afghanistan, we could change this? How do you force a man to change his viewpoint? Put a soldier in every house? Put a puppet government and a constitution that they don't agree with in?

Puppet gov and constitution? Isn't that what we have already done? Actually a puppet gov. per say is what we might need for a while, just not the one that's in place. The gov in place right now is basically formed by people who helped us oust the Taliban. What we need is a goverment with progressive social views. One whose primary goals would include the reconstruction of social services such as schools and universities in addition to everything else. Ignorance is one of the main causes of the mistreatment of women in my opinion, as well as many other societal problems. Get rid of ignorance through education, and you're off to a good start. From what I've been reading, educational services have pretty much reverted to the status quo. This is just an example of one of the many things were not concentrating on in Afghanistan. The problem is we are spread to thin because of the pointless war in Iraq.
I agree that all this takes time and no one expects attitudes to change overnight. The big issue is that right now we are not laying the groundwork for these changes to come about in the future.

WHatever happened to Miss AFghanistan?

She was sentenced to death, I believe.

That is because the Americans did such a good job destroying the Taliban in Afghanistan. right? Then after doing such a good job there they chose to take on the people of Iraq, right? How much further will King George extend us?

What are you going on about? Muslim culture condemns people who appear "naked." She hasn't been back to Afghanistan yet, I don't think. Please, enough with the sniping. If you want to go on a rant about "King George" do it with arguments and logic, would ya?

They played a facinating audio journal of an Afghan American Teenager visiting his warrior uncle there. He says the Americans like professionals and the only professionals are the communists who cn switch sides in a sec. So the US is putting Afghan scum in charge and wondering why there's problems. So sad.
