They need some sort of UN presence or something to help police the country until things get back under control. :(

Nice. Maybe that great poem by W. will help things over there.

Wonderful

What the hell are the US soldiers there doing, except for combing out caves and maybe marrying 8 year olds?

Afghanistan should have been the example of Democracy that Iraq is touted to one day be, but alas Bush tied up his forces in Iraq. Afghanistan needs a lot more troops before it's going to see much improvement.

I agree. They need forces and they need money, both of which they're getting little support from the US compared to what they need overall.

Much of Afghanistan is lawless and President Hamid Karzai's administration has little control outside the capital, Kabul.

If Karzai can't rally the warlords to his side, he doesn't belong. He needs to either wipe out the warlords, or convince them that joining an elected government is the way to go. If he can't do either, there needs to be someone who can.

Karzai is looking to extract just as much personal gain from his power as the warlords are from theirs. Why would they submit to/join him?

That would be us, but we're clearly not committed to improving life for the Afghanis. Hell, if our troops haven't even left Kabul, how would Karzai's ragtag army? Didn't we promise them a hefty chunk of money that never got delivered? Half-baked won't do the job.

First of all don't completely believe what you read, much of it is typically exagerated. The women there ARE better off, but not as good off as they will eventually be. It's only been a year, it takes time to change the behaivor of an entire society...

Welcome to the real world.

Sucks doesn't it?

The only way to get improvement over there is get the government up and running and their economy doing the same.

Soldiers cannot be the police force, and we cannot make Afghanistan a mini US. If we can make it so the worst of things do not happen, then thats great. Trying to force American concepts of male and female roles on them is not going to work.

I find it funny that most of you expect miracles overnight. All this whining is nothing but politically motivated drivel, such actions prevent any real solution from happening.
