From CNN Producer Lonzo Cook

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Frustrated Hajj pilgrims, some of whom had waited two days for flights to Saudi Arabia, stormed a plane carrying Afghanistan's minister of civil aviation and tourism Thursday and beat him to death, security officials told CNN.

Dr. Abdul Rahman and about 20 other passengers were on an Ariana Airlines Boeing 727 destined for India when as many as 100 pilgrims discovered he was aboard, Afghan Interior Ministry Gen. Fatah Forough said.

The pilgrims then pushed their way onto the plane and kicked and beat Rahman, officials said.

Rahman, who was traveling alone, died Thursday en route to a hospital, an Afghan military official told CNN.

Attackers also beat the president of Ariana Airlines, Rohullah Aman, inside the airport before Afghan security forces intervened.

Aman was then handed over to international security forces, who took him to a hospital, where he was in stable condition.

Formerly Afghanistan's national carrier, Ariana made its first international flight in 2 1/2 years in late January. Both Rahman and Aman were on that flight from Kabul to New Delhi, India.

The pilgrims had planned to fly from Afghanistan to Mecca, where they would join about two million other Muslims from more than 70 countries.

The pilgrimage, known as the Hajj, is part of the framework of Islamic life: All Muslims who are physically and financially able are expected to perform the Hajj at least once.

Some of the pilgrims in Kabul had been waiting for two days outside the airport's terminal building on the apron of the runway, hoping to get a seat on a Saudi-bound flight.

The airport has no departure lounge, forcing the pilgrims to endure several cold nights.

No one had been arrested or taken into custody in connection with Rahman's death or Aman's beating more than eight hours after the attacks. But approximately 900 people did take off on two flights to Mecca after the incidents.

Early Friday, another 100 people were still waiting to board a flight to Saudi Arabia.

The flight to India, on which Rahman had been a passenger, was canceled.

:Q:frown::disgust:

Lord knows, I always like to start off any religious journey of mine by particpating in a mob killing.

My thinking is, it's all uphill morally from there.

And from Reuters:

<< Haj Pilgrims Kill Afghan Minister, Witness Says

February 15, 2002 12:58 AM ET

KABUL (Reuters) - The Afghan interim minister for air transport and tourism was beaten to death by frustrated Haj pilgrims who dragged him off a plane at Kabul airport, witnesses and an official said Friday.

Abdul Rahman was pulled off Ariana Airlines' only aircraft, which he had commissioned to take him to New Delhi, and beaten to death inside the terminal building Thursday, Haj pilgrim Mirza told Reuters.

Saudi officials have said pilgrims coming from abroad must arrive by Sunday to be able to perform haj.

Mirza said the pilgrims had camped at the airport for two days waiting for a flight to Mecca. He said they had paid $1,500 for the trip, a fortune for ordinary Afghans.

"If we cannot fly today someone else will get killed," Mirza said.

An official at the ministry confirmed the killing, but declined to give details. "Unfortunately (the minister) is no longer with us," the official said.

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), the multinational force helping to maintain security in the capital, is deployed in the military section of Kabul airport, but Afghan security forces guard the civilian side.

ISAF officials were not immediately available for comment.

Afghan pilgrims have continued to travel to Mecca throughout more than two decades of war in their homeland. Despite grinding poverty there has never been a shortage of applicants.

More than a million Muslims flock to Saudi Arabia every year for the pilgrimage, which Islamic teachings say should be performed by every able-bodied adult Muslim who can afford it.

Yeah beautifully peaceful religion Islam is.... but I suppose this is another 'isolated incident'
rolleye.gif
...boy those isolated incidents sure are piling up.

No arrests made? These so-called religious pilgrims were then allowed to travel on to Mecca so they could pray? sick f*cks.

bah if I am forced to be reasonable (dammit) I will admit that it a small, extreme portion of Muslims that seem bent on violence.

That said, can you even imagine this happening in a western nation? A tranportation minister beat to death because of flight delays?

Well, you certainly don't see packs of Buddhists kicking people to death just 'cause they're laid over at the airport...

Absolutely not, we're civilized here. We only kill people over the truly important things, like an inappropriately run kid's hockey practice. :frown: <B>

"If you don't hurry up, we are going to beat you to death. We're late for a religious service."

There is just something terribly paradoxical there...

Yipes..... imagine how Holiday travel would change over here if all passengers were this way ;) Unbelievable.......

<< Every country has a few wackos, it just seems the middle ease has WAY more than it's fair share. >>

Hmmmm... that's probably true, there seem to be a lot more wackos in that part of the world than elsewhere.... however, without having seen any official figures, I'd venture to guess that there's more murders per year in our "civilized" world here than in the middle east every year. I'm not convinced we have any fewer 'wackos' around here, but I think we generally tend to keep them out of positions of power and leadership.

i personally think those idiots need a wh00pin of their own to set them straight. Seriously, a lot of them that come to America are undisiplined and enter our public schools like animals... I should know I live in Dearborn, MI (the most populated city of middle eastern decent besides chicago) I don't know I'm not racist or anything but the way these people act and carry themselves (not all of them) is just sad.
