ABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 15 - Forces of the newly trained Afghan National Army took control of an air base in the western province of Herat, where 21 people were killed Friday night after a local commander attacked the base, the president's office announced Sunday. Two more battalions of the new multiethnic army were dispatched to the province on Sunday, forcing back the forces of the governor, Ismail Khan.

In southern Afghanistan, fighting against suspected Taliban members continued in two areas. Seven government soldiers were killed as they slept in their checkpoint west of Kandahar on Saturday night. Eight suspected Taliban fighters were killed and 11 detained by Afghan government forces in a clash near the Pakistani border, local officials said.
Too bad Bush had to detour into Iraq and leave Afghanistan behind in a mess.

Well, at least Iraq is "Mission Accomplished".

Oh wait....

Looking at the good side of this article, it appears the afghan army is doing well.

Well, considering they just lost 28 soldiers, I'd expect they'd move in reinforcements.

It stated that in the article, but it does not mention US aid in the operation.

the part that was interesting about these intra-chief clashes (that killed 21 a few days before) is that the local chieftans waged tank and artillary battles. 😱

all that opium will be buying a lot more arms for the regional leaders. Should be some big fireworks when the central government clashes with one of the regional bosses.

Sad but ironic that these Afghan rebels pose more of an immediate threat than Saddam did in the last decade or so.

maybe he figures it in the sense that drug money from burdgeoning opium sales may find its way from sympathetic tribal leaders to fund AQ elements hiding in the border regions. Don't let me put words in conjur's mouth, tho...
