<< 3,000,000 men fit for military service is a weekend op? >>

Ever see what 50 men with AK-47's do to a M1-A1 Abram?? Get rolled over.

I'm not far from Ft Carson where we house Ton's of Armor. Those things are only stoppable by serious tank killers like A-10's and other M1's

It will be longer then a weekend tho your right about that, I was just commenting on how much they really have no chance as Saddam did years ago.

All the equipment they have over there is outdated equipment from the Superpowers, Between our Armor, Planes and Apachie's I wonder why they don't think it through to just hand over Skinny boy.

Ever see what Afganistan did to the Soviet Union in the 80s.

If we send in land forces to attempt more than just attacks on a few important targets we will suffer heavy losses. These people realize that they have no shot if they stand up to us and fight. They will fight in guerrilla warfare. It isn't that hard to take out a tank in rocky terrain with a rocket launcher. Remember they can fight back effectively.

However, they do need to be punished! We cannot alloow this to go without retribution. But America needs to be prepared to handle a war that doesn't take a few weeks to win like the Persian Gulf. A long sustained military operation is necessary if the Afganistan people try and resist.

Note that I said people. If it is just the army than we may be able to win fairly easily. However, if their gov't convinces the people to resist our attack as a holy matter than we will have problems in the area.

Ever see what Iraq did to the US a few years ago?

They ran and hid. Expect the same from Afghanistan.

That's manpower *available*. The US probably has tens of millions of manpower available..."how big are their forces?" is the question

A Apache crew of two killed thousands of Iraqi in that war so I think its pretty meaningless to argue about how many troops we have or how many they have. In Afghanistan there will probably be a reversal of the ratio, there might be a hundred of us for every one of the terrorists.

excellent posted link, Talon; I read it both times you posted it -- it's one of the few relevant expert opions I've gotten a chance to read so far... the article makes its point, backs it up, and doesn't try and extrapolate beyond what the contained informationis capable of supporting. people should read this and other such opinions. thx

See the main difference between the US + many countries vs Taliban/Bin Laden, we aren't trying to capture and take over the country.

Second, during the USSR vs Afghanistan, the US and many countries helped the Afghans, the Taliban no longer have any support, and have had their fuel lines from pakistan cut off.

Also Afghanistan may have 3million potential men for war, you gotta remember, the Afghan people DO NOT LIKE THE TALIBAN. Id be willing to guess the Taliban forces are less than 100,000.

And don't forget that the rebel Afganistan Northern Alliance is rallying troups already to aid "if" America attacks, they will undoubtedly play an important role as intelligence gatherers and terrain guides that the Soviet Union had no chance of possesing when they attacked in 1979.

My guess is even if they have soviet aicraft(they wouldnt have any toher kind of aicraft) and the pilots/mechanics to fly and maintain them, I highly doubt they have enough fuel to use them much if at all.

I also liked Talon's link....it shows how a highly mobile, determined, small group of fighters uses all resources around them, from the terrain to the local populace, to kick a technologically advanced and superior fighting force"s ass...I just hope american strategists have been able to glean every possible bit of information about this war as well as vietman and will use this info to properly train any and all troops that may be involved with any military operation that may happen in this country...I believe we will need every advantage possible to win any confrontation when dealing with the terrorists in this area...just remember...they kicked Russia's ass and we really didn't win in Vietnam....the upcoming battle, if it unfolds itself, will definitely be no cake walk as it was in Desert Storm
edit: S3 and Chronically impared have valid points though
