Honestly if you are not an overclocker or big game enthusiast and are going to ditch this in 12-18 months, you should probably go for something kinda cheap but reliable and sink that money into an SSD.

Microcenter has this : GA-B75M-HD3 LGA 1155 B75 for $65. B75 is the "stability" chipset that winds up in a lot of business desktops. You don't need to get anything fancy or performance oriented if you're not regularly pushing the system. Motherboards might make +/- 2% difference in performance. Not worth it.

If you don't already have an SSD though, getting one will definitely change your computing experience. We're talking <10s boot-up times vs 30-40s with a HDD (if it's a fairly clean build) and application load times that can be 5 - 20x faster than with an HDD.

Good to know that B75 is what I should get. You described my needs and usage perfectly. Thank you. I will quit worrying about upgrading.

Are you kidding me? Just pay 10 more bucks for H97. (MC charges tax, newegg probably doesn't unless you're in 1 of 4 states) They're cheap. They're on newegg starting at 80$. You get to upgrade to Devil's Canyon or Broadwell down the road. You CANT do that with H75. Why in the WORLD would you want to save pocket change for that?

Heres one H97:

Spending 70$ on a motherboard that locks you in without being able to upgrade to broadwell or Devil's canyon sounds pretty weird to me.

But hey if you want to save pocket change to be locked in without being upgrade-able down the road, go for it.

Because the OP cannot use an i5-2300 on a socket 1150 H97 motherboard...

I understand your point.

I have an i5-2400 so if I only get a motherboard for it I save at least $130.

Oops. My mistake. Apologies on that. Guess I skimmed through too much, I thought your buying a new CPU.

If you don't pay tax at newegg, you can sign up to get free shipping and probably save a bit on H75. They have some pretty decent H75 boards around the 50$ area, might be worth checking out - I wouldn't spend too much on a board with old tech.

I really don't think you need B75, but it's up to you. Personally on a consumer level there's no real functional difference. Just look for the basics, gigabit LAN, usb 3, sata 6GBs, etc.

Good to know.
