I'm helping out a friend who is looking for a pr0n scraper that is inexpensive and will work for a smallish business (around 200 sessions max). I pointed him towards an enterprise solution, which he liked until he got the quote and saw that it would cost over $10k a year for a subscription (granted, this included malware and various other types of filtering, but still)

Any thoughts on something cheap that will keep the tubes "somewhat" clear of offensive materials? Also it would be sweet if it were a subscription service, because if it ends up being an appliance you know who is going to get called when it breaks... but I'll consider appliances as well.

Cheers-

There are several appliances that will accomplish this; I personally use Astaro at my home (it's free for home use) and it does web filtering and a ton more. Untangled is another solution (you can either buy an appliance or install it on a PC yourself). Both of these are subscription services that the business would pay for, but offer support as well, in case there's a problem with it.

A Juniper SRX100H will do it with a yearly subscription (it's like $150/yr I think). That's like $1000 in hardware, onetime cost, and $150/yr in subs. Plus you get support, should anything happen.

This or squid+squidguard

http://www.squidguard.org/

Free linux setup

Or Squid + Dansguardian, It's not a subscription based service, but it does do a pretty good job of filtering with the weighted phrase lists + blacklists, there may be a way to automate blacklist updates, I never tried. Combine it with openDNS and someone will have to be searching pretty hard to find pron, which they will inevitably find regardless of the approach you take.
