Tyan is too expensive. Anyone hear of any cheaper boards (read: I don't have to sell my kidney to get amd smp) hitting the market soon? TIA

MSI is going to release a cheaper one I believe, and I think I remember hearing that Tyan was going to put out a dualie board without the onboard SCSI that would be considerably cheaper.

No, if you read Anandtech's article on the Athlon MP processors and boards from last week, it clearly indicates that right now there's the 760MP chipset, and Tyan has exclusive use of it (at least for now). Cheaper 760MPX-based dual boards will be out towards the end of the year..... I wish there was an affordable reliable dual athlon board out there now, I'd be all over a nice dual 1.4 gig T-bird setup :D

The cheapest Tyan Thunder is 418 dollars but its been striped of 64bit slots and DualU160 onboard compenents. So The Asus and MSI boards are expected to ship August but i wouldn't jump so fast as they maybe flakey on their first trips out. MPX isn't an improvement but a lower cost solution with IDE RAID and such other lower budget embedded parts , if my memory serves me right. I would grab the tyan before anything else and i own a MSI so...But it all depends on what your using your Dual System for, if its for web browsin and talking in the forums pfffft, or if you haven't built a dual system before i would suggest getting a VIA apollo133a Dual board for entry level.

The MPX will be an improvement over the MP. Adds things like full support for 66MHz and/or 64-bit PCI slots (the only real difference, I think). The budget factor will be determined what the mobo makes put on their boards (ie, onboard LAN, SCSI, video, sound, etc.)

SUOrange, actually, if I'm not mistaken, the reverse is true. The 760 MP chipset already has full support for 64-bit PCI etc, the MPX will be basically the exact same chipset, without the support for 64bit PCI devices. Unless you're planning on running truly high-level stuff, you won't need the 64 bit device support right now anyway. Of course, if you do need the 64 bit device support, you can afford to shell out the cash for the full Tyan board.

SUO has it down...the curr MP supports 64bit 33MHz PCI, whereas the MPX is gonna do 64bit 66MHz PCI

I dunno...the more I ponder this, the more reasonable it seems. The dual channel scsi onboard saves me having to drop $250 on a pci card, and the two 3com nics shave off another $50. That means I'm really paying $200 for the mobo. I'm just not sure if I'd rather wait for the cheapo nForce. Problem is I do a lot of m-tasking, and even though I post in forums, i'm often burning a CD and applying filters in the background. SMP and SCSI just seems like the way to go, but it's so much $$$ :(
