Unfortunately, the title and summary kinda summed up this thread

EDIT: Reviews suggest it's a superb lens, but note it's got a kinda whacked range on digitals being a full-frame lens...

I used a Tamron 17-50mm + 1.4X TC for some walkarounds during my trip overseas. That's like 24-70mm.

I felt very uncomfortable using the range because I was constantly not able to go wide enough. I found myself frequently swapping out the TC so that I could get back my wide end. I realized that for most shots, if 50mm wasn't close enough I'd just zoom with my feet rather than hassle with the TC only to take it back off when I wanted my wide end back immediately afterwards.

The range was the huge reason why I went with the 17-55/2.8 instead. The optics on the 28-70/2.8 are great, but it's a little long on a crop factor body to serve as a general purpose zoom. Then again, I can't and don't speak for everyone. Some prefer reach over wide which is understandable.

Easiest way to tell is to shoot with an 18-70/3.5-4.5 kit lens for a few weeks or months and look at which end you prefer.

I have the Nikkor. It's an awesome lens and one that probably spends the most time on my D200.
