Ignore the crappy dvd drive lol, I know it's beige, but hey, I have a door on the case, so I don't care. I'll be getting an NEC 4550 once I'm done buying fans!
As for the floppy disk drive, it's there for memtest, nothing more.
OK, so first, a picture of what I had to contend with:
The obstacle
Then, what I had to do:
Now, to get that, in there
My über professional methods/tools....
:
Two cut knuckles only
The result:
Mmmm, shiny
At the moment, my harddisk is still warming up, I'm going to wait a bit, run a defrag etc to make sure it is up to temperature, as at the moment, it is levelling at a chilly 28degrees (that's the hard disk that is suspended in front of the 140...
Before installing it, I plugged it in, initial impressions...
1. It moves some air. Put my face in front of it, and jeeesus. lol. I have no method of testing though really. I can confirm though that I put a match in the case once it was installed and it blows it out, which surprised me, as it didn't manage to blow it out when just standing outside the case, but either way, quantity of air moved = good.
2 Noise. Well, directly in front of the fan, (within a few centimeters) you can just hear the air rushing over you, so it's hard to guage. it you are directly above the fan (completely out of the air flow) it does seem very quiet. I'd definately say that in my opinion, at 1,000rpm, it makes as little noise as my akasa amber 120mm does at 1,000rpm. which is frankly very little.
Undervolted I'd expect this would be very quiet. I think it wouldn't be suited to being on the desk directly in front of you though, as the slightly bassy noise of the air flow is audible when on the same horizontal plane.
I have no desire/need to try it undervolted it yet, as there is still one little 80mm bastard that makes the most noise.
The large CFM figure may not mean that it is suited to certain tasks though. Yes a lot of air is being moved, but I think that as this is over a larger area, then the pressure of the air being pushed is fairly low. As such, I'm fairly sure this wouldn't be suited to being a CPU cooler, and it's performance would probably be limited markedly in a case with poor airflow (see really messy cables etc)
Having said that, half of my RAID 0 is hanging in front of this fan, and whilst defragging, it's still at 29 degrees. This is at least a 5 - 7 degree drop over the 2 80mm fans that were previously installed. I'll engage in some more testing in a bit.
The case temps seem very low too, well, I have a sensor in speed fan that I consider my case temp, and either way, that is also about 5 degrees lower. This may not just be the fan though, as whilst tearing things apart, i did do some cable hiding behind the good ol' hard disk bay, so that could be helping matters. Fact is I couldn't resist, sorry for jeopardising the reliability of the results
I'm pretty happy at the moment, all is going well. I have a thermometer here built into a clock, so I don't know how accurate it is, basically, my room temps tend to vary between about 13 by this clock (which is when it is really, really cold in here) to about 27, which is when I've left the heating on full by accident overnight and it's like a sauna.
At the moment, it says 19, and my 'motherboard' sensor in speed fan says 21. Which seems pretty awesome lol, it hasn't been that close to my aparent room temp before. The air coming out the back is definately cooler aswell.
Just defragged about 30Gb of data, hard disk is at 31.
I'm done waffling.
