Back in the day, MS stated that Aero would be released for WinXP when Vista was released. I haven't heard about that for a long time, but it would be kind of nice to have the new interface on a few rigs I don't want to buy Vista licenses for. Has anybody heard anything about this?

thanks,
fox

AFAIK Microsoft has never stated that they would release the Aero interface for XP, the amount of code required to backport it would be immense.

They will be backporting other Vista technologies, but those are mostly for application support (i.e. WinFX).

I think they are going to backport the Windows Presentation Foundation display system, just not the Aero interface. It is pretty key that they make WPF availabnle to XP users so that software publishers will begin to write more of their software using the extra power available with WPF.

Check out Microsoft Codename Max if you want to see some fun programmers can have with WPF and Win XP.
