AE6 upgrade to XP problem

Trying to upgrade from 98SE to XP home on an Abit AE6. Stops at HPT-360 366 controller. Updated the mobo bios to most current. We really do not want to wipe the drive and install from scratch. Thanks for any suggestions.
 
Backup data, wipe the drive and start from scratch.

I attempted the upgrade you are trying once, had to uninstall and re-install 90% of the programs after the upgrade and then it still wasn't stable. Ended up wiping the hard drive and starting from scratch which resulted in a clean stable install, plus the benefits of the NTFS file system.
