Well, I was doing something bad today and I'd tell you what is was but we can't say that word in the forums. Anyway, I got 2 viruses (one a trojan) and 125 problems (adware/spyware) found by Ad-Aware and Spyware combined.

Basically, I turned my computer back on this evening after my adventures this afternoon and got asked some permissions from ZoneAlarm that I've never seen before and VirusScan kept asking what to do with a Trojan every 3-4 minutes it seemed like and I kept saying delete. This kept going on during me frantically running VirusScan and then Ad-Aware to get rid of this crap.

VirusScan found a virus in C:/MyDownloads and this:

Downloader-ER, BlazeFind.Bridge >> C:\windows\temp\bridge.exe, also found at:
c:\windows\downloaded program files\bridge.dll

Ad-Aware found this:
2 Processes Identified
53 Registry Keys Identified
12 Registry Values Identified
46 Files Identified
3 Folders Identified

Ad-Aware files deleted were:
WinFavorites
MoneyTree
StopPop
istbar
DyFuCA
180Solutions
Bargain Buddy
Internet Optimizer
c:\windows\system\a.exe
msbb
PossibleBrowserHijackAttempt

Upon reboot, Ad-Aware deleted:
c:\windows\bi.dll
c:\windows\downloaded program files\bridge.dll

Then I deleted my temp directory, temp. internet files and history and rebooted.

Ad-Aware then found:
4 registry keys
1 registry value
1 File

SpyBot found:
3 problems

I then ran VirusScan again and it found nothing and Ad-Aware found nothing as well.

Let this be a lesson to me and anyone else reading this. It's just not worth it!

125 might seem like a lot, but I work at a University computer help desk, so 90% of my job is running adaware on girls computers, average number where the spyware becomes noticable and a problem is 200+. It's a rarity to find one below 100. I've scanned 2 or 3 computers that have 800+. Never broken the 1000 barrier though, I think at that point, a computer just stops working. Most viruses found was ~1,800. This one virus just copied itself EVERYWHERE, over and over, I couldn't help but laugh.

For Spyware you should try Spy Sweeper from www.webroot.com, I used to use just Spybot...because its free and free is good. But Spybot missed a ton of stuff that Spy Sweeper caught, and not just cookies but Spyware apps and registry entries.

They have a free trial so if you wanna see for yourself just run Spybot, clean your PC, run it again it will give you a clean bill of health. Then run Spy Sweeper and you might find a few more things on your machine!

One of my customers had over 4000 files infected with a virus that I deleted with NAV 2004. Another one of my customers had over 1800 spyware/malware problems detected and deleted by Ad-Aware. Since I started using Spy Sweeper a few weeks ago, I removed over 7000 items off one of my customers PC.

Spyware seems to cause more problems than viruses as of late. It's good for business. ;)

beware thet if you remove yer spyware you can get a runDLL32.exe error when shutting down (I had the exact same problem methinks) you'll have to remove the runDLL32.exe reference that starts the bridge.dll

Have had any number of client systems here in my care.... I run a few mandadory things. And the numbers I'm talking are not on just one machine !
Adaware... found over 400 items.
AVG Antivirus... found 80 - 100 items.
CWShredder... cleaned up the rest.........

Very average numbers in reality as I've seen worse such as John spoke of above... Would like more people to run firewalls, but as John also mentioned... "It's good for buisiness!" ...if they don't!
