I went to a client's office the other day to help with some printer problems she's been having. When i got their i noticed she was connecting to the internet by connecting to a starbucks internet connection across the road.

I understand in many states now it's illegal to piggy back onto somebodies unsecured wifi connection, but would starbucks internet connection be classed as a public wifi spot ?

The client told me she's been doing it for months now, ever since the store opened, and she stopped paying for her own internet connection because she's getting it for free now

Starbucks WiFi isn't free to access. They charge a fee to use.

Well if they have a Starbucks card they use once a month, it seems they can definitely use it for 2 hours per day. There is no requirement (from what I can see) that they need to be 'in the store' or make a purchase.

Id be more concerned with her security using an open wifi like that than the bandwidth issue...

When did Starbucks start offering Wifi for free? Thought they still charged unless you were using an iPhone?

Tell her the possible repercussions if she gets caught. Tell her how unsafe it is.

Go over to starbucks, log into the network.. then into her computer.. Use your imagination for the rest.

if anything, you might bring it to the attention of Starbucks that they have an open wifi connection...

of course, the owner may have it open for a reason

I would just mention that it's not exactly secure but beyond that why the hell do you care?

since when is it free to customers? you have to pay to jump on the AT&T hotspot at all the places around me. Only way I get it for free is because I have an iPhone.

Too lazy to read your own link?

Competitive pricing for paid Wi-Fi All other customers can receive two consecutive hours of Wi-Fi access for $3.99.

Starbucks wifi isn't free to customers. It's only free to those who have paid for other random shit.

Starbucks' connections are not open to the public.

Pretty surprising she's able to do that, sounds like their net admin messed up... How could they not have noticed, though?

Exactly!

So if I hit Arcadio in the head with a baseball bat it's ok because no one cares? Some of you people have serious holes in your moral compass. Must be magnetic interference from a gay weather balloon.

Your first duty is to your client.. if you value your business. You are not required under any law to report her to anyone.

You seem slow. My exact quote was "Well if they have a Starbucks card they use once a month, it seems they can definitely use it for 2 hours per day"

Learn to read, ok?
