hi,

have aked this about 6 months back but I'm sure it's all changed now...

does anyone have some recommendations? I've sent this email off to a couple of manufacturers....

*divx 3/4/5 playback & xvid
*mp3 playback CBR/VBR, for files 5MB-200MB
*audio CD
*DVD and DVD-R video playback
*manual picture resizing (some of my divx movies are not a perfect height/width ratio)
*fast reliable FF/RW facility for divx/xvid/mp3 files

anyone have any opinions or anything else they think i should know?

:)

that looks quite good :) and silver too - will match

i'd noticed amazon list philips dvp 630 & 720, and also toshiba SD340.

i don't mind spending the extra few quid to get a player that will do what i want it to (up to the £120-£140 tag). any ideas what the extra money gets?

To my kowledge the Toshiba players won't play dvd+r Media. I just bought the Phillips DVP642 & it has played everything that I have thrown at it. :)

Here's another  for the Philips 642 player. I've had mine for 8 months or so, and love it.

The Philips player doesn't support advanced Divx/Xvid features like Quarter Pixel, but still a nice Divx player.

The Philips 642 only does up to 8x FF. That is the only problem with it.

EDIT: That and a quiet clicking noise.

I think the Philips 642 plays Xvid files just fine. I can't confirm this, though, as all I have is Divx files.

I don't think it does...unless they've added this feature in a recent firmware update (I doubt it).

I personally have the Philips and am partially disappointed with it.

I've heard that the RJTECH FJ800DVX is better and would buy that instead. The store that sells both recommends the RJTECH over the Philips at the same price.

The real annoyance I have with the 642 is with the screen not going black when playing music cds. The 3 other dvd players I had previously did this and I miss it terribly. Nothing like laying back in a dark room and falling asleep to music, but with this player it is a no go.

i am another phillips owner. the remote is dainty at best and the 8x FF can get old quick. also, i used some dvd-r and dvd+r media that didnt play. lets not forget it cant decode dts; i am kicking myself because of that ( i have alot of asian dvds and west of america dts is actually used on 80% of DVDs). also, it tastes terrible. besides those reasons, its a good player [heh].

Does the divX disk need to be formatted in a particular way, or do you just dump an .avi DivX file onto a CD and it will play?

Hiya, aidanjm.

At least on the Philips DVP642, you just dump the DivX AVI file onto a disc (either CD or DVD). I couldn't get mine to play an Xvid encoded one, though, but I'm guessing it's because the player didn't support the latest Xvid codec. I've read from several sources that they had no problems, but the articles were many months old.

Hope that helps.

i have had a new, hopefully better idea for a divx player.

it involves a mainboard, cpu, ram, vga and a hard drive.

i think i can pull it off for about £150, and it gives me a "f-u-t-u-r-e p-r-o-o-f" video/audio player (with potentially huge built in storage capacity), with every one of the features i wanted ;)
