I've got my system pretty much built, except for the cpu. I went with 512mb of corsair xms ddr pc2700 cas2 with an abit ddr board, rather than build an rdram system. now, "bottleneck" issues aside, what kind of performance boost/advantages are there between using the 2.4B over the 2.4A with DDR? i've sort of run out of money, and if i'm not getting my money's worth, i might go with a northwood A. pointers?

just for kicks..here's what i've got:

alpha pal8942 w/ vantec tornado 84 cf/m fan
abit IT7 mobo (gasp, no legacy?)
512mb corsair pc2700 cas2
40gb maxtor ata133 fer boot
(2) w.d. 120gb specials 🙂
gainward geforce4 ti4600 golden sample (best damn g4 out there imho)
tdk 40x
16x dvd
audigy plat.
geforce2 mx200 64mb w/tvout outputting to...
5" lcd mounted in the bezel of...
lian li pc75 w/ 465w(430) enermax whisper
---
pcmods rheobus
10' of glowire
sound-reactive cold cathode xoxide.com

THANKS!

stock performance of the B cpu should be better due to 133 fsb against 100 fsb of the A. But if you overclock ( I think you do based on the HSF selection), the A would run better at the same final speed. (as the fsb of A would be more at the same final speed.)

stay with me here, i'm a bit confused..

so are you saying that say, taking both an 2.4A and 2.4B to say, 3ghz, the A will be better? in what way? do both chips hit the same "ceiling"? and how much of a limiting factor will my ddr be? so many questions, so little time to get my chip..

thanks for your help zzzz

Actually I got them backwords. The 2.4B will have a fsb of 166 at 3ghz while the 2.4A will have only 125 so the 2.4B would be faster.
My suggestion is to get a 2.26B chip. People have overclocked it to 3ghz using only air cooling. I am not really sure how far the 2.4B goes but it wont be much higher than 3ghz using air cooling.
