Right now I have a Opty 146 running at 2.74 with a gig of ram with a Abit KN8 Ultra.
I just did a new install of XP thinking I needed it due to bogging down when doing the simplest of things, ie, reencoding video. Well, it still does it, even when I burn a dvd.
I also use it as a media server with the PS3 and it is a dual boot with Vista Ultimate.

Should I go with a 4300, 6600, or other? Also, which mb should I be looking at? If anything I would want the cpu to run as least as fast as the Opty (lot of good that is). I also am not a gamer.

thanks to any....

There's no way an Opteron running at 2.74GHz could be slow. If you're having multitasking issues, I'd suggest popping in a dual core Opteron or Athlon.

So you have one gig of RAM and are doing a dual boot system and wondering why you have slow downs. Me thinks you need more RAM or if you do not want to waste money on old school DDR1 RAM, perhaps a full system upgrade is in order.

As for what to get, that totally depends on your budget. I recommend one of the new P35 chipset boards. The mainstream P35s are out and under $150 now. Get one of those, pair it with a 6420 and 2 Gig of RAM, crank your FSB up to 400, and you will undoubtedly be faster.

Thanks for the replys. My budget is around $300 for the mb/cpu. I already have Crucial Ballistic Tracers PC2 8000. I think that the 6420 would be a nice fit and am looking at the Asus Plus mb.
