Advice on upgrading video on a PIII600

Alright, I've had this system almost 3 years now. I'm not much of an upgrader... I usually hold on til it can't do much more then build anew. My previous system was a P75 and before that it was a 386 with win3.1. So when I upgrade, I *really* upgrade.

I'm nearing that point now and would eagerly jump on a new Tbred if I had the cash (and could convince the wife that a new system is more important than rain gutters)... but my rational side is holding me back and whispering "Hammer" in my ear. So I will wait to build.

BUT, that being said, I have a TNT2 Ultra in this P600 and with recent games like SOF2, GTA3, NWN, and JK2, it just isn't cutting it for me anymore. Some of you might ask, why even upgrade video if yer just gonna build a new system once Hammer is unleashed. Well, I plan on giving this system to my son, who is 5 and on a P2 400 Optiplex right now and reaching the end of his 16meg vid card while trying to play Black and White and Tony Hawk 3.

So, my long-winded thought is to grab a vid card that will speed things up for me now (tiding me over the next 6 months or so) and then work great for him for the next 2 yrs or so. Since the P600 is the bottleneck with just about any GeForce card, I was leaning toward the GAINWARD/CARDEXPERT GeForce 3 Ti200 64MB at Newegg for $113.

My question is... is this overkill for a P600? Am I wasting $$ when a measley MX or anything cheaper would do a fine job on such a system?

It's definately overkill. The GF3 series cards are more suited to computers with CPU clock speeds of double your PIII 600. I'd say a card like the ATI Radeon 64mb or a GF4 MX card should be just fine.

Thanks for the replies. My gut was telling me it was too much card for this old rig. The GTS-V looks damn nice for $45. I can't say I even gave it a look cuz I figured switching one 32meg card out for another would be a waste. Figured I'd need to go 64meg to get a decent boost, but evidently not. I'm sure I'll enjoy the nice fps increase while sabering in JK2... and my son won't know what to do, being able to drive his porsche all over Midtown Madness2 without a frame drop when the rig becomes his.

In my opinion the amount of memory on a card is not that important - memory speed and the age of the card's chipset is more telling.

A GF3 may be a little much for the P3 600, but not complete overkill. It really comes down to how much cash you have to spend. If $113 isn't too much get the GF3, otherwise consider what else has been mentioned above.
