Advice on upgrading a processor on an older system?

Hi,

I currently have a Dell Dimension T700r, oldie, but its treated me well. I have added RAM and video to the computer, with success. Now, I am curious--is there any plausible way to upgrade my processor to a decent speed (1.5GHz or higher, if possible) for cheap?

I currently have the same motherboard that the Dell came with, which is listed as the 7468T. If any other specs are needed, let me know.

Also, I'd like to stick to Intel--had success with them--unless AMD provides something easier/cheaper.

Thanks for any help! I'm a hardware n00b, so any help is appreciated!

From the pictures on this upgrader's site it looks like you have a slot-1 motherboard with 100 MHz FSB. You can find 800 - 1 GHz slot 1 P3, or use a slotket adapter and a 900 - 1 GHz Celeron (around 10% slower than the P3). The P3's are rare and expensive, especially the 1 GHz slot 1.

You might also be able to put in a 1.0 - 1.4 GHz Tualatin Celeron for $40-50 plus another $10-20 for a "sloket T" socket-370-tualatin to slot 1 adapter (COmpGeeks.com might still carry these).

But this may be the time to retire this old PC to second-system status and buy something 3 to 5 times as fast.

Yeah, searching the forums, I think I may be interested in building a budget computer of around $400-600. It seems that it would run a whole hell of a lot better than this one--but I'd need a monitor too, which makes everything much pricier.

I was thinking of getting a really good laptop, but gaming on a laptop gets irritating and uncomfortable.

I'm gonna search on these boards on building a new computer. I have a couple contacts who may help me build it, since I'm a complete hardware newbie.

Thanks for the help! Feel free to chime in with any other advice! (And that goes for the rest of yeh punks, too..)
