advice on tv purchase

so i've been doing some tv research and its pretty overwhelming with all the choices...

i know i want a flat panel so i know my choices are lcd or plasma...

i have 2000$ to spend.. primary watching is going to be regular satellite and hdtv programming... with movies (dvds) coming next...

viewing distance will be about 10ft so i think 36"-42" should be good enough...

i just need some recommendations to start off with..

thanks all...

Stay far, FAR away from EDTVs they SUCK. You can get a nice HDTV LCD from Panasonic like this one within your price range. Do not get an EDTV, you will regret it.

hdmi port.

Wait, how can the TV be EDTV and still have an HDTV tuner?

EDTV can only display 480p, so you won't be getting HD right?

Since you plan on watching regular TV still (4:3 format), I would recommend LCD even more. You will be able to watch without stretching the picture horizontaly like you should when using a plasma to prevent burn in problems.

Correct. EDTVs take an HDTV signal and scale down the resolution to match what they're capable of displaying which is typically 480p. Thus EDTV is not something I ever recommend to somebody shopping for a new TV.

Correct, my Westinghouse 32" is 16:9 and I just have the black bars on the sides.

Uh, he said flat panel. You listed a LCD PROJECTION TV. Big difference.

Personally, after viewing many different TV's, I think I'd opt for an EDTV Plasma over the LCD set you listed if that were my only choice. Of course, I think spending an extra 600-800 and getting the HDTV (1024x768) 42" Panasonic would be the smartest choice.

Hey, atleast he said EDTVs suck. 🙂
With LCDs and Plasmas make sure to try to look at the picture quality yourself, but a lot of stores probably do not have the TV set up 100%. You might also want to get it professionally "tuned/calibrated" once you do get your TV. That way it will give you the best "picture."
Goodluck finding that TV. Meh want one too!!!

I went into some retail stores yesterday and looked at plasmas and LCD's.
Some of them were beautifully set up.

Some looked like what they were showing was an SD recording of TV, recorded onto VHS, then transferred at least once to different VHS, then displayed on the TV (bear in mind these were LCD and plasmas, mostly HD ones).
They looked REALLY REALLY bad, but it was obvious that it was the way they had been set up.

yep, isn't it convenient that the most expensive TV's look better for some reason? Oh, look, somebody "accidently" turned all the brightness/contrast levels all the way up on the lower cost models....

Yeah, I'd want something bigger too.

If you have a light controlled room, you could get a nice HD projector in the $2000 range 😉
