I'm looking into replacing one of my older, noisy towers that doesn't get much use with something smaller and quieter. The system will primarily be used as a file server, to tinker with Linux, and do some Folding@Home. Since it will be in my bedroom, I'd need something quite if I want to keep it on all the time. Onboard video and sound are okay, but a AGP slot (or decent S-Video output) is required incase I want to turn the machine into a PVR down the road. Expansion slots should be full size.
Either AMD or Intel is fine, but will probably go with AMD since they are less expensive. Budget is around $300 for the SFF case/mobo, CPU, RAM.
