Bought an ANTEC 620m HCG from Fry's and just after 30 days the ADDA ADN512MB-A90 fan has begun to make the annoying classic clicking sound.
Apparently the cause is the internal axial pressure spring rubbing rotationally on the upper bearing race. A smaller diameter spring should have been used, but the OEMs supplied are so large in diameter that they contact & rub even on the internal housing. (One person reports that they were able to effect a satisfactory repair by tearing down the ADDA fan & replacing a better fit spring taken from a 90mm dual ball bearing unit that was excess.)
At first I was pissed at ADDA, but this really is ANTEC. The ADDA fan is an uncommon size (135mm) & appears to really be a case fan intended for use in servers. If you've ever checked out a server farm or closet, then you will agree that it is simply a noisy environment and a clicking fan would not be of concern or noticed.
There are many great fans whose design is dedicated to quietness (eg, use of fluid bearings, single magnetic ball, etc.) and ANTEC has advertised on their packaging "whisper" quietness of their employed fan. As a minimum, ANTEC needs to pay more attention to hardware selection. ANTEC should have at least employed the "LD" (ie, "L" = Low Noise; A90LD) variant of the ADDA fan.
Besides being a hassel, it appears that RMA is no guarantee of a suitable replacement as all of these PSU's employ the same ADDA. It is also suspected that there is a chance that I would just receive a unit that someone else returned for the same reason that Im RMAing. (If you try to test the unit without actually using it, you'd conclude that it performs okay, because the rattling is of an intermittent nature and begins to occur most often after the unit has been running for at least 30+ minutes or more like after an hour.)
Anyways, I see on the networks that this is a not rare experience regarding this model PSU. (Beware also, that use of this particular ADDA variant is used in other PSU brands.)
Has anybody had experience with this situation?
Does anyone know of an alternate fan that would be able to just drop in to the PSU (ie, 135x135x25mm with 120mm screw holes), two wire and have the needed other characteristics (eg, start voltage, air flow, rpm, etc.) to be a suitable replacement for the ADDA ? (Note: 135mm appears to be uncommon, particularly two wire)
